Hello; I have recently aquired a 55 gallon set up from a friends father. It used to be a salt set up and I have scrubbed and scrubbed until all of the gunk has been removed, nothing from the salt set up is being used except for the tank and stand, all of the rest of the equipment has been purchased new. I am in the process of cycling the tank this month and them will decide what type of Oscar and other coplimentary fish to bring home. I have 1 power head (150 GPH i believe), 2 bubbler tubes, 1 200 GPH power filter (Bio wheel)and gobs of air movement. I do want another power head probably a 300 GPH and possibly a canister filter or another power filter the same as I currently have. I am not new to the fish tank community I have previously had a 100 Gallon with Oscars and Gars, they survived very well for many years but as most things they needed to go, I got the itch again and here we are. So far I enjoy the forward information on this forum and look forward to educating myself more. Thanks

Welcome to the forums. I've learned more here in the last 6 months than I have in my 15 years of fishkeeping.

Hey there, and welcome to OFL!
Oscars and Gars, you say?
That's an odd combo!
Wish i had a combo like that, but i'll have to do with Oscars and just one Gar...

I wouldn't trust my Tiger oscar with a baby gar, for i fear my tiger may not be as tolerant to a small gar, as my Red Oscar used to be.

What kinda Gars did you keep, and do you have any pics of your former fish?
How big and how old did you gars get?
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

Not real sure of the type of Gar, there was 1, we got it at about 4" long and was 14" 3 years later, the pet store bought it back when we got rid of the system, there were 2 Tiger Oscars (got them at about 2" and they went with the tank and were about 10" 2 years later) and a couple of big Plecos. The system was up and running for about 6 years when we out grew the house. Ditto on the 55 is only large enough for 1 Oscar. While in the military I had 2 Piranhas in a 30 gallon for 6 years, they were about 1.5" when I got them and were 8", when one got hungrier than the other I only had 1, the pet shop I purchased it from bought it back for a sizable sum as well.
