Just wanted to say Hi -- thanks for creating this website because I have two lutino oscars. They are smart and actually react to you.

Thanks for joining the forum/website. Like you, I love my Oscars and I enjoy sharing the information I have learnt over the years with other people in the hope that it will help. Hope to see a bit more of you

Thanks Ironside! The early bird may get the worm but what does that say about the early worm????

Oscars are the best fish I ever owned and by far the most fun to own.

Regarding plants, have you tried putting in water sprites? At first my two oscars were attacking it but they stopped and basically left them alone. Don't plant them but let it float at the surface. Hope that will lower your nitrate levels.

Post edited by: thomas, at: 2006/12/27 01:16

By the way Ironside, I first got interested in oscars because of a book called "Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquarium" by David Boruchowitz, editor at Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine. Have you heard of him? He specifically singled out oscars as his favorite -- calling it a puppy in a tank. In a way, they are!!

I do put some floating plants in the tank once but they all did. Problem is, I have a condensation sliding glass cover just on the lid. The water isn't too far from this so it's very difficult to put things underneath. I was trying with the idea of trying plants once again. The Tiger Oscar which used to be the culprit that used to uproot the plants has long since died. I had got another Tiger Oscar which might do exactly the same. I can only but try. I don't come across a nitrate filter on the market that wasn't too expensive. I have been toying with the idea of getting one to see if it works. If anybody has ever used a nitrate filter, let us know if they are any good

I would pass on the nitrate filter, although it's not so much the cost but its effectiveness over time. Plants are always the best way (cheap plus it cleans other stuff too). I once saw a set up in a magazine that had plants in a separate container just outside the main tank but both are connected somehow. Now that's an option although I would try the water sprite first. It likes floating anyway (as opposed to rooted) and maybe your oscars will leave it alone like mine.

You are correct, plants are a very good way of soaking up nitrates but it all depends on whether the Oscars will leave them alone. I may try floating plants again and see what happens. I don't want to put too many in all its will block of the light. I still think the nitrates filter is worth a try since it isn't so expensive. Anything is worth a try in my opinion. No, I haven't heard of that guy was talking about. I like the expression "puppy tank" I have always referred to them as river dogs which is very apt really.
