I'm a new Oscar Owner, I bought two Oscars for my 75 Gal tank. The pair came out of the same tank at the pet store and now one is picking on the other. They share the tank with a Plaeco and the bully doesn't seem to bother him at all. Should I take one back to the store or will they work it out between them?

welcome to oscarfishlover

Okay, it's difficult for me to comment on the fighting because I haven't sat and observed your Oscars for a period of time. However, you do actually have too many large fish for your size of the tank. 75 gallons is perfectly okay for one Oscar and a couple of smaller tank mates, it certainly isn't big enough for two Oscars, and a pleco. I can tell you from experience that there is no way you would be able to maintain an acceptable water quality if you were to keep those fish long term..

Hope that helps

It does I will take one back to the store. I've had the pleco for over a year now in this same size tank and he has gotten a little bigger but doesn't seem to grow any more. He is about 6" will he make it with the Oscar I decide to keep?

Plecos are very resilient fish. They will just get out of the way of any fish that want to have a go at them. Can you post a picture of it? Pleco's are nocturnal which means they are active by night. So if you haven't got a very big tank, you are going to have your Oscars sleeping with a fish that will be quite active. I have on a few occasions heard off fish developing quite large ulcers on their flanks, this is actually down to pleco's sucking on their sides, probably because they like the taste of the slime coating. This is something to bear in mind if you ever do see strange marks on your Oscar.

Not all pleco s get to the huge size that the Commons/sailfins do, some of them only reach 8 inches and are probably a little more suitable for the average home aquarium. however, the very big ones don't really be long in the small aquariums

I'm a fairly new Oscar owner, I have a 13inch tiger and he is so healthy and happy, put in a Pleco bout 10cm a few weeks ago, he doesn't really seem to mind, now and then he gives it a bit of shit but mostly just leaves him be.
Still learning about these fish but very much enjoying having him.

the only problem with plecos is that if you dont get the right kind they can grow into 2 foot monsters. if your tank is big enough for them then there is no real problem however most people get common plecos and find that they outgrow the tank in a short amount of time.
