Hi all, As I have been posting on here i guess i should introduce myself. I am male 37 and I live in Hemel Hempstead, UK. I like this site as it is a friendly oscar site unlike others I have looked at. Everyone seems to get friendly advice rather than getting grief for doing things wrong. I have 3 tanks, one discus, one a general cichlid (and others tank) and a oscar tank

I wanted a Discus tank but just didnt have the water for them. my PH is naturally a tad alkaline and I tried to adjust it but it bounces back up too easily so I never bought the Discuses. I went with Angelfish instead which was great too. I love angelfish but I say I think I like my Oscars more now..

Jake, i live in an area where the tap water is hard. If you want to keep discus just buy a RO machine. They are not expensive. Doesnt use electric just plumb into you tap water. If purifies your water. Removes all hardness and any nitrates etc. Then depending on you local water you can either mix it with tap water of you can add stuff out of a bottle. Dead easy. Discus are great to look at but oscars are more fun. I wouldnt recommend changing from oscars to discus but have discus as well. No more discus from me this is an oscar site.

I have well water that is rich with Iron. So, I have a water softner as it enters the house. The problem with that is is really is artificially soft water as soft water in normally acidic. my water is extremely soft, yet remains quite alkaline at the same time.
It was a chore trying to keep the PH near neutral, never mind get it acidic for Discus. besides, treating the water to alter the PH brings other problems like excess phosphates etc. So, I decided to just raise something else besides Discus and fell in love with freshwater angelfish because they are so graceful and get quite large too. Thanks for the suggestion though.
For now, I'm quite content with my Oscars now.
