Hello,
I've recently set up my 75 gallon tank for an oscar. As of 11/16/08, it's ready to go. All I need to do is find an oscar I like. I've narrowed it down to three types: tiger oscar, albino tiger or a zebra oscar. I really like the zebras but haven't seen one in years and can't find any at my local stores. I'm going to see what I can find online and maybe hold out for one of them. If that doesn't work out, then I'll choose between the tigers.
Here's what I'm think of going with overall:
1 oscar
4 to 6 silver dollars
1 pitcus catfish
and undecided on adding another cichlid, either a convict, firemouth, blue acura or some close to the acura.
Looking forward to sharing my adventures,
Curtis

Thanks. I do have several years of experience. I used to keep discus but after 4 years they got really sick and died. I think it was a piece of decor that was "supposed" to be water proof, but instead started coming apart. The fish in my avator was my biggest and favorite. It was time for a change after he past on. I also have a 20 gallon community tank.
I don't have any personal experience with oscars and was happy to find a site like this. If you think I'll be a little over crowded, then I will rethink my choices. Though I was only planning to keep my choices in the tank any where from 12 to 24 months. By then, I should own a house and will be able to get a bigger tank. I don't know if it makes any difference, but I bought a fluval FX5 just for the occasion. It's a bit overkill but you can't have too much filtration.
Still think I should go with less? If so, what number of buddies would you recommend for a 75 gallon and 1 oscar?

if i were in your position i would forgo the sd's and go with 2 firemouths and 2 blue acaras(not green terrors, acaras. there is lots of confusion in identifying these 2 breeds) and of course keep the oscar.
just my opinion
btw nice looking discus in your avatar

Thanks.
Well, the sd's were for the wife. haha But Sounds like they might make the tank too crowded. I thought they would be small enough to add, but not sure now. Do they make a lot of waste?
The oscar, pitcus cat and sd's were what I settled on, but wasn't sure if I would be pushing it by adding a convict or etc.
Decisions, decisions.
Btw, how do you like the Jags? Those seem like really cool fish. Do you have them in a separate tank?

Okay, so I took the forum's advice into consideration and came up with new numbers.
How does this sound for my 75 gallon? Either...
1 Oscar
1 Pitcus catfish
1 Convict
1 Firemouth
Or, if I can find zebra oscars...
2 Zebra oscars
1 Pitcus catfish
Keep in mind that this would only be their home for 12 to 24 months, then I would move either group to a tank no smaller than 125 g.
I didn't realize sliver dollars get as big as discus, so I'm going to wait on them until I get the bigger tank. Since they're not cichlids. They should be easier to add later.
Thanks for the all the help. haha

Thanks. I use the test strips to maintain my tanks. Do you have any good or bad experience with those? I do water changes about every 7 or 10 days. On the rare occasion, I have gone two weeks, but try to avoid that.
I think I might have found some zebra oscars, but it's hard to tell at such a young age. What do you think??? (link is to the oscars)
