Hi fellow fish lovers,

I have been wanting to set up a nice tank for years, i recently purchased a used 4ft tank from ebay. It came with pretty much everything including a large external filter.

I spotted some tiger oscars at my local pet store & decided they are the kind of fish i want to keep!

I later discovered livefish.com.au I ordered 6 oscars they are about 5cm long & are currently buzzing around in the 4ft tank(neon tetras didnt last long!)

My aim is to get a good pair & then sell the other 4 (don't know if they will pair up before they outgrow the tank-but i haven't thought that far ahead!)

My end result will be a 95 US gallon set up with 2 oscars & a few tankmates.

I wouldnt mind having a few silver sharks with the oscars, would they get along ???
What other fish go well with oscars ?

As you can see, i have dived straight into it!

Any advice would be great

Cheers,

Rob

welcome to the site rob

your 6 oscar will definetly outgrow your tank before they reach maturity. oscar become sexually mature at about 1 year old and this tranlates into anywhere between 7-11 inches in length. try to picture 6 9 inch oscars in your four foot tank.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

i am not sure how would you combat heavy biolaods of
your 6 oscars once they grow a little bit. overstocking
is prone to water problems and health problem. i hope
you wouldn't end up with no fish at all.

for asking our opinion, honestly, i suggest you go for a
bigger tank. even the 95 gal tank will not be enough for
2 fully grown oscar.

Thanks for the welcomes,

I'm getting attatched to the little ones! They go buzzurk when i feed them (they don't mind their food either!)

There are 2 that i would like to keep & i'll sell the others. I'm still hoping to house them in a 95gal tank.

What is the magor issue with doing this ?..swimming room or bio load ? can i use an axuillary tank to give extra volume?

I'd also like to have abuot 3 silver sharks in the same tank, will they get along ?

both issues are about the same. a 95 is barely large enough for 2 adult oscars. since they each grow to over a foot in length a four foot tank will be a little cramped for them. as for the bio load, with a strict regiment of tank maintenace and lots of fitration you MIGHT be able to cope with the mess but there are no guarentees. bigger is always better.

as for the 3 silver sharks, i assume you mean bala sharks and they make great tankmates for oscars provided they are big enough not to be a meal. the prob with them is that they also grow to about 12 inches in length and need lots of linear swimming room. try to picture what your tank will look like with 5 foot long fish in it.
