whats up OFL. Ken's the name and i have an addiction. I originally bought two juvenile oscar fish and an adult jewel cichlid. Under my own understanding i put them all in a 35 gallon hexagon tank. Within a month i was netting a dead oscar out of the tank. With a little research and a growing love for these fish ive changed to 55 gallon standard tank for the 1 remaining oscar, jewel, and now 2 jack dempseys. I may try and get pics up! Looks like ill be getting another tank soon too. I got my eye on the lemon, and tiger oscars. Any tips or ideas?

welcom to the site.
2 oscar for a 90 gal up to give way for a fully grown
oscar. adding few tankmates will require good filtration.
geting lemon and tiger will make them 3.... 3 is a bad
number because if pairing had been established, the outcast
will be bullied and driven away, sometimes death.

thanks paul,
should i try for an even number of oscars to be safe? I plan on having at least a 100 gallon tank in the next 2 months. My plan was to introduce the new oscars and my albino in it without the other cichlids.

100 gal and 125 gal have the same footprint and cost,
i suggest you go for 125 gal instead. you will have an
allowance for grown up and few tankmates.

for four oscar i would recommend nothing less than a 180 us gallon tank. i have personally tried the same idea you have (4 oscars) and i did it in a 180. the problem i ran into was aggression between the 2 males for dominance. now i have 2 large aquariums for my oscars(a pair in each tank). imo a 100 or 125 gallon tank is good for a max of 2 oscars and a couple of mid sized tankmates.

btw welcome to the site.

When I get into the larger tanks, will I be needing a filter different from the hang over aquaclear im using now? Im tryig to make a list of the things I will need in order to make the larger tank purchase. What are the things i will have to do different when changing from a 55 to a 125 or 180us gallon tank? Thanks for all the help in advance!

while your oscars sizez are relatively small from the
start, bigger tank can accommodate a lot of bio-loads
due to big volume of water. but as oscars grows, this
is where filtration is needed to keep water under check
otherwise, you will run into lots of problem. normal water
turn-over should be 5X for canister type or 10X for HOB.

if you go the 180 route an fx5 will handle your filtration need. they are about 300 on ebay. and youll need another heater.
