I have an Oscar that has stolen my heart. I found this site while trying to find out if he is sick. I will tell you all about him but I really want to make sure he is okay first.

Our tanks have been cycled for a long time with regular maint. He has never had a minutes problem. But he has recently started shuddering to a point he splashes water and disrupts his plants and the frogs. He opens his mouth wide and shakes like he is fighting a fisherman. Any ideas?

I cant really tell you what hes doing as I am very new to oscars but I will say hello Michelle.

Up until a few weeks ago, I had a beautiful and 11 inch red Oscar, unfortunately she died. Anyway, I recall her doing exactly what you describe yours doing a few years ago (nothing to do with her demise, before you worry) it was almost as if she was having some kind of fit. Anyway, like I said this was probably three years ago and she lived for a long time after.. why they do it is a mystery. They could have something stuck in their mouth which they are trying to dislodge I suppose. Maybe even some irritation somewhere on the body makes them do it.

You sound like you keep your tank in good condition, if the water is good, there is no reason for fish to be ill. Unfortunately, they do develop illnesses sometimes that have got nothing to do with anything you've done.

We have been very fortunate. He bought two Oscars about the same time. One from a pet store and the other from a store that sells everything. I was surprised to find the healthier Oscar came from the store that sells everything. He has a great personality. He actually chases me from side to side of the tank, (even when he is feed!) He has always been so bold and vigoriuos we named him Chickenhawk. The other Oscar has spent a year hiding and freaking out when we get close to the tank. To a point he crashes into things and hurt himself so we traded him in on things for Chickenhawk.

It is great to find a group like you all to share info with!
