newto-oscars created the topic: My new obsession

I have been reading on here a lot ever since I got my fish so finally I decided to join!
I have an adorable baby Tiger Oscar that I love dearly. I got him 2 weeks ago and he is already eating from my hands.

His name is Poseidon because of the trident that he has on his forehead.
Until he grows another inch or two he will be hanging out in my 20 gallon tank. I'll get him in a 55 after that!

Welcome to our little community, glad he decided to drive up. Gorgeous little baby, you will be amazed how much he will change the next few months, he will be completely different coloration in six months time. Keep us updated with photos, it's always nice to see the documentation of a fisheries growth.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Hello and welcome to OFL. Very unique pattern on the little fella, hope he retains some of it. For this guy to do real well in life a bigger tank is def in order very soon. Dont bother with a 55g, he will also outgrow that within a year or less. Seek out a tank with a minimum 48x18 footprint, 75g volume or more. The more space you offer, the better he will do

Thanks! I've fallen in love so fast and it almost seems natural to want to spend that money on a bigger tank! :pinch:
I hope he starts to get the orange on him because he's mostly brown and a really opalescent beige.
He's obsessed with beef heart and I try to get him to eat other stuff but he is so sassy.
Also he hates my phone seeing as I accidentally blinded him with the flash, but I will try on the pictures!
Making funny faces at him as I type.

Stop feeding beefheart. Its difficult for Oscar to digest and process. Quality pellet is the best way to go. Also needs significant veg content in the mix. You have to be the boss with feeding. He loves the beefheart and may accept nothing else until he gets hungry enough. Stay strong, wait him out!

It's so difficult because he's so adorable! What if I made my own beefheart? I heard that's okay.

Oscar is an omnivorous cichlid, mammal meat should not be in their diet. He will eventually accept a better food, but you have to be more stubborn than he is.

Peas are used as a laxitive of sorts, not much nutritional value. A good veg based pellet works well. Weekly treat of freeze dried krill, some chopped white meat fish like tilapia. A vitamin boost really helps young Oscars. Boyd's Vitachem on freeze dried food is very good for them.
