Hello my name is Tanya. I got two albino oscars for my husband for his birthday last February. We got them from a reputable fish store, but got some bad advice anyway as I read more in this site. THANK YOU for this forum and site!!! The long and short of it is that they were seriously under housed and we lost the smaller oscar in about 6 months. I now have one approx 10" albino oscar in a 55 gallon tank alone. I was doing a 75 to 80% tank change weekly, but things got crazy the last two months and it became more like bi-weekly.

Now Bruce is having an issue I think may be early hole in head disease. He is still eating well, but became very lethargic the last 4 days or so. He is usually cruising and social with us. about three days ago I noticed a pit about 1/4" wide and a bit longer near his gills. Another smaller round pit appeared near his mouth a few days later. His belly is sunken in, but his feces are still normal.

I tested the water and ammonia, nitrite were at 0. PH was at about 8.5 and nitrate was off the chart. I did a 80% tank change yesterday and the nitrate dropped to 50 and PH to about 8. Doing another tank change now and plan to do it daily for 5 days as recommended. He is eating Hicari Blood Red Parrot food as this was recommended to keep his colour bright. I soaked the pellets in the epsom salt solution, but he grabs and then spits them right back out without chewing. Not sure how to help him if he won't eat the medicated pellets.

More water changes to drive nitrate down. 55 is too small for a 10in Oscar, and high Ph makes toxins more dangerous.

Thanks I found that out with a little reading on this site. I am looking for a 75 gallon and a canister filter for it as well. Is that big enough for him by himself?

75 is what I call bare minimum for a big Oscar. If you can go with a bigger footprint, say 60x18 and over 100gals, your Oscar will be very happy. 75 is ok, bigger is always better. Canister is a must. I prefer the API Filstar canisters for small to medium tanks. I see you are in Alberta. Anywhere near a BigAls? Boxing week sale has great discounts on everything.

the picture shows your fish had been in trouble sometime ago...
look at those craters, it shows it had suffered with HITH before

nice looking fish you have there.

thanks. We are now looking for at least a 100 gallon tank for him. We are about 5 hours north of Calgary, but willing to make the drive if necessary. That is where the pair came from in the first place.

All the pits on his gill cap and in a curve to the crater at the corner of his mouth are new. I just tested the water again tonight and the nitrate is at 20 and the ph is at 7.5 Going to keep changing the water. He finally ate some of the treated pellets, so that is a bit of a relief.
