Would it be too much if I wanted to put a fluval FX6 on my 125 Gallon? The FX6 is rated up to 400 gallons

Well i think there is no such thing like over filtration. a filter should be capable to filter all of your aquarium water 2 or 3 times per hour. your choice is good for your fishy......

Filter ratings do not apply to tanks holding large messy fish. Depending on fish stock, I would still include an Aquaclear 110, maybe even 2. Canister should have a turnover of 4-5x per hour. Actual gph flow can be as much as 40% less that claimed, taking in to account media and some degree of debris in the mechanical media(sponges).

there is no such over-filtration.... better water will give you healthy and vibrant fish!

I currently have one fx6 and a jbl 1501 in a 400lts tank. If i would look in to the rating of the filter the jbl should be enough but in real enviroment even the fx6 is not enough. Real capacity is more or less only 50% of the claimed by manufactures specialy if you have large and messy cychlids.

I've always said that there isn't really anything that can be described as "over filtration", but you can have more filtration than your tank actually needs. A lot of people get a little bit carried away and think that if they put five filters on their aquarium it's going to be super healthy. All that will happen if you will get to the point where you have enough biological and mechanical filtration so any extra will be redundant. It certainly wouldn't mean that you can add loads for fish because your tank size is always going to determine how many fish you can keep, regardless of filtration.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)
