So I saw somewhere that you can use pool filter sand in the aquarium is there any certain brand I should use home depot has a 50lb bag of quickcrete brand for $6!! I wanted black sand but I don't want to pay so much seeing I have a 77 gal tank and would need about $100 worth. Should this be OK for my Oscars? Any brand OK?

I'll prob go get a prefilter today seeing as I don't have but about $50 to my name lol. I'm a stay at home mom n my bosses don't pay very well lol. But I will upgrade my filter in the future. I put in the sand yesterday everyone seems to enjoy it and it looks good. Funny thing is I accidentally stepped on the skull we have and I smashed it. I tried to hurry up and glu it back together before my husband got home since he bought it. SUCCESS!!! U can't even tell now lol. I'll post a few pics but I am about the clean it so excuse the mess

ok... i am a bit confused... pool filter sand as filter is different from a pool filter sand as substrate...

I have seen a few videos of ppl using it and it saved me about $90. I'm going to get some hairgrass today and see if it will grow in it. I'm not sure if it will, who knows, my O's might not let them grow but imma find out.

Pool filter sand is #20 silica sand, and much larger than play sand. It's hard to suck up unless it is pushed into the filter intake. I don't know of a filter that can lift the sand into the intake due to its weight.

Any brand will work. Be sure to rinse the sand until clear.
