MIke created the topic: NEW (hurt oscar)

Hello my name is MIke i live in NJ. I have had an oscar for about 5 years now. He was always a happy fellow until the past few days. He likes to jump in the tank, and normally bop his head on the top of the tank cover. normally he is ok. But the other day he hit himself pretty hard and with no visible signs of injury he hasn't been the same since. He is on his side most of the time and just isn't to good. LAst night when i went to bed i was expecting to wake and see him floating at the top this morning. He was completely on his side on the bottom of the tank when i went to sleep. I thought either he would be floating or he is just injured and is resting. I figured for a fish to sit up right they need to move there bodies to keep up. well if i injured my leg i would lay on my side and not move either.

I just figured i need to do something for him if there is anything to even be done , any one have any ideas? thank you

Hi there Mike and welcome to the forum/website

Sorry to hear about your Oscar. How long ago was it when he hit himself? Of course there is always the possibility he has stunned himself in some way. However, if it has been a few days, I would expect him to get over it if it wasn't too bad. The first thing you need to do is check your water parameters. Ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. Fish can often show signs of ill-health if the water is bad so you need to rule that problem out first. Is the fish feeding at all? Unfortunately, fish are probably one of the hardest things to diagnose when problems occur. For all we know, a fish could be very ill with no signs of ill-health on the outside so it's really just a case of waiting and see what happens.

Post edited by: Ironside, at: 2006/12/27 20:16

Hi iron side and thanks for the welcome and the reply.

He banged himself up about 3 days ago now.
I would rule out the water quality just for the fact he was fine moving around like the agresser that he is until i heard him jump the bang then he hasnt been the same since.

i did do a 50/50 water change anyway as i do every other week. he actually started looking better yesterday. he has come up to eat every day like i said looks like he is on bottom just helping heal himself (in my opinion) he comes up to eat but yesterday he was moving around much better not really on his side any more when i fed them he came up like his old self jumping around but then the dumb fella jumped to hard again and banged himself once again and went back to being on his side and hurt.

but this time when i feed him he wont come up and eat . although this time when he banged himself it wasnt as hard as the last time but i guess seeing he wasnt 100% from before it really affected him

The only thing you can do at the moment is keep an eye on him. Sometimes Oscars to do act strange as you probably know so I don't think really there is anything you can do at the moment. Is he bashing himself on the tank or something in the tank? Also, how big is the tank?

Perhaps you could try feeding him food that sinks, he may just be scared to come up to the surface in case that tank lid gets him again:)

Any way hope he is ok to-day, keep us updated.

now that would be funny if that was the problem fish :O)

but sorry to say i dont think the big fellow is scared of the lid. if he was ok today he would come up and bop his head again i would bet. he never seems to learn. i guess i should have learned and took some water out , but not sure that would have helped either he is a high jumper.

anyone want a 7-9 inch cat fish? got it from the fish store about a week ago they called it a yaki cat or something like that. he is too big for me. granted i think most of you are all from the UK and im in the states so not sure how that would work out getting it to you.

i tried posting pics of the oscar and the yaki cat but i dont see where i can :o(

Not familiar with their catfish you are talking about, mind you, they have different names in different places. Some of them get absolutely huge, far too big for an aquarium. Regarding posting photographs. If you bear with me, I am going to add a message to this forum explaining how to post photographs. It will be under "please read"
