Hi There,
My Name is Tim. I live on the NNorthernBeaches of Sydney,

I have just bbought a 270Ltr tank and have put 2 Tiger O's in it. This is the 2nd tank i have. The other is just a little 85Ltr with some Basic tropical fish that Ive had for 2 years.
I have had the tiger O's for about a week now. I'm a little concerned that there might be something wrong with them. Both of them are hihiding in the far back conner's 1 is behind the filter the other is behind the filter outlet.
I'm i just being paranoid???

I have checked the water and its fine.

Also is it ok to p L Live plants in the tank with the O's. I've herd that they will just distroy them.

Any help/andvice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

Welcome to our community, I bet the weather is better where you are than it is here in the UK?

Okay, your tank is 60 UK gallons, big enough for one Oscar. Did you introduce your Fish to a fully cycled tank? Could you please give us the exact water conditions?

It is not unusual for newly introduced Oscars to be rather shy and timid, in fact there is almost an identical threads going at the moment, you might like to check it out, site, can't remember which one it is just at the moment.

You may want to reconsider rehoming one of your Fish before they get too big and you find it difficult to get someone to take it off you.

I don't bother with live plants, if the Oscars do not rip them to pieces, they die after a while anyway.
I may not always be right, but I am always the boss

hi Tim, welcome aboard.

hiding is normal to a newly introduce o or os to the tank. give them time
and they will inter act with you soon. however..some factors may affect them:
cycling the tank?
temperature?

anyway, you told your water is fine thought it doesn't ring well with us

Hi Tim,
I'm Alex from Adelaide. I've spent a lot of time in Darling Harbour over the years messing around with tall ships. Welcome.

I have checked the water and its fine.

Great. Have you got the readings for:
Temperature
Ammonia
Nitrites
Nitrates
PH???
Also does sydney use chloramine in the water?
(Hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs)

Oscars are smart and therefore can take a while to adjust to a new environment. If they are healthy and the water is OK then they'll warm to you when they realise that you feed them

Also is it ok to p L Live plants in the tank with the O's. I've herd that they will just distroy them.

Java fern can sometimes survive. Oscars love to break stuff and even rip plastic plants out if they can. I tried to make a completely Oscar proof tank by siliconing heavy duty plastic plants into deep recesses but the buggers still ripped them out over the years.

Hope this helps

First, welcome to the site.

Second, mine hide all the time - especially when I change things around in the tank, do water changes or just plain don't feed them when they THINK they should be fed!

If you look up in the upper right hand corner ... waaay up there, you will see my babies hiding. They like to hide behind the UGF at the top. They do not do it as much anymore since I fixed my water conditions (thanks to everyone on this site!!).

Post your test results here and these fine folks will give you the scoop!

Again, welcome!

P.S. You can tell I'm in Florida by the palm tree in the tank!!

Hi all thanks for the warm welcom and to your quick response.

I have just checked the water today and results are

Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 0
Ph - 7.0
Ammonia - 0.50
Tep 26.2c

I cycle the tank for 2 weeks before putting the O's in the tank.
I also have a Barb in the tank.

I'd be worried about that ammonia - it is very toxic, even in small amounts! You may need more bio-filtration for your nitrate cycle or your tank is not yet cycled properly. Try to keep ammonia at 0 all the time.

Otherwise figures are good.
