TOPIC: Hey!!

Hey!! 2 years, 4 months ago #69041

Hey!!
I'm new, just wanted to say hey!!

I just got two veiltail oscars a week ago, they're badass!! I'd say they're about two inches.
I talked to the petstore sales lady about all I need for a tank for oscars and what not, told her I had a twenty gal hexagonal tank, she said that'd be fine for two oscars but from what i've read here, i'm worrying now that its not big enough. They seem pretty happy, get along with eachother really well. They're already brushing up against my hand when I put it in. I know I will need to get a bigger tank eventually and have a friend who is willing to sell me a 55 gal for pretty cheap. Do you guys think a 20 gal is too small?? Again, they seem to be doing great. I'm thinking the only draw back with a smaller tank right now is just more cleaning needed. The water gets cloudy pretty quick. I've already cleaned it, that really helped with the cloudyness.. ok, i feel like i'm rambling. haha. let me know what you guys think! Keep in mind I'm a total newbie when it comes to oscars and tanks in general.
K! thanks!

Congrats on your Oscars, and yes you need a larger tank and pretty soon. Most folks here are going to tell you that 55 gal is minimum for one oscar. You could get by with a 75 Gal for two if you have the right filteration but a 100+ gal would be better. They are soo cool when they are little but they will grow about 1 inch per month for the first year or so.

Oh yea welcome to the site.

Hi and Welcome,

Miles has given you good advice... You will need 100= gallon tank SOON!!! Oscars grow very fast. I have a male that is just over a year old and is 14 inches long. So you need to find yourself a big tank. Along with that big tank, you are going to need a BIG filter.
Do you have a water test kit?
Oscars require a great deal of maintenance. And very clean water.

I would suggest you either get the 55 NOW, or upgrade to the 100= within a very short time.

Again Welcome and please feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Once again welcome.
I'd go for Nicki's second advice, if i were you.
That will save you an upgrade for the second time in a short period.
The oscars won't stop growing by the size of your tank.
But if they do, their growth will be stunted and your fish is more suseptable to disease. Waterchanges will have to be carried out daily soon, if you keep them in the hexagon, for water will polute very quickly when your O's start to grow.
better plan ahead, and do it right the first time.Think BIG!
Big tanks require a lower maintenance level and most big tank keepers can do with one waterchange a week.
Check craigs list and secondhand sites.
Loads of stories here of OFLers finding good bargains on very nice tanks.
good luck and keep us posted.

welcome aboard to the happy fish keeping site.
the rest got you covered.... the only consolation i can give is that
veil tail grows slower that the normal o thus you can enjoy them in
that smaller tank a little bit longer...say 3 months.... giving you
enough time to upgrade the tank.
