Hi my name is Adrienne and I live in Texas. I am new to this site and to the wonderful world of Oscars. I have a 75 gal. with one beautiful oscar. I am so attached to him already and I have only had him for over 2 weeks now. Should I get him any tankmates?

Welcome to the site Adrianne. I am glad that you are enjoying your new friend. You could probably get a couple of tank mates that don't get too big and don't cause too much mess. For example, you could get a couple of silver dollars and leave it at that.

Whatever you choose, choose very carefully, some fish get very big which wouldn't be good for you because your tank isn't quite big enough for a couple of very big fish. I would ovoid plecs, they are too messy. Some of the smaller African catfish don't get too big, no more than 8 inches.

I have got the absolute perfect tank mate here in my 125 gallon tank, you would absolutely love him and he would fit in just fine. He is a type of Jade eyed Cichlid. From what I can gather by looking him up in my books, I actually think he is a false Jade eyed Cichlid. He shouldn't get any more than 6 inches and is just a lovely little fish. He hold his own against the Oscars and just fits in really nicely. If you can't find one of these, you could just go for a normal Jade eyed Cichlid, they really are delightful little fish, you would love them.

welcome to the site be very carefull when you choose plecos as tank mates as most of them grow to big and once the are big they make more mess than clean.

ive got sum bristlenose plecos and they are great little tank cleaners and they dont get bigger than 4inches but silver dollars or tinfoils will do just fine with yr oscar.

keep in mind that silver dollars are scholing fish so its not fair to justbuy one get four in my opinion.

enjoy

Welcome to OFL Adrienne

Think many have that about getting attached to their Oscars quickly, they just have lots of personality.
I'm not really sure if your Oscar would suffer staying the only fish in the tank, don't think so. I had mine with only a pleco for a while, but when adding other cichlids he got noticeably more active, sometimes seems to be watching fish just like I do, lol.
If I were a guy, I\'d have probably needed only 30% of the amount of words to say this

hi and welcome to oscarfishlover.

firstly id like to say that 4 oscars in 55gal tank is to much as 1 oscar needs a minimum tank size of 55gal.

oscar only become mature 13months plus so i can almost garuntee that they are not trying to mate but rather they are fighting over territory as the they hav possibly out grow the tank.

suggestion would be that you try and upgrade to a much bigger tank as to many oscars in a small tank will cause alot of problems like fighting, ill fish, ect.

4 oscar are gonna need a 200gallon tank for them to stay happy and healty.

hope this helps a little.
