Hi my name is sean! I live in orlando Fl. just got done cycling my 55g tank few days ago all my bactera and such lvls are spot on! but iv noticed my oscars (red oscar= spunky and tiger oscar=felix) have been chilling towards the bottom of my tank and hiding in my log decor during the day when tank lights are on with some minor daylight. but spunky seems to get brave everyonce and awhile and venture towards the top just wondering if this is normal for them? all the research i have done for the last 2 months before starting my tank and i havnt read anthing with this occurance. but lots of good info on this site and seems like well knowledged ppl on this forum!!

Sean

Hi Sickend!

Thats a nice pair of oscars you have there. The one on the right reminds me of my O when he was little.

When I first got Chopper he "played dead", literally for over a week. In fact my Wife called me at work one day and told me he had passed on. When I got home that night I looked into the tank and noticed that his eye was following me about. This is one of the things that make me love oscars so much, they can be such characters!

I then performed a little experiment and turned off the tank light and all the lights in the room and sat very quietly. After awhile I flipped on the room light and there was Chopper swimming around his tank, but as soon as the light came on he rolled onto his side and, kinda like a leaf, slowly sank to the tank bottom.

He kept this up for a week or two, but after awhile his hunger overcame all else and he started meeting me at the side of the tank for his food and otherwise acting normal, for a Oscar , though to this day he still prefers the light in his tank off ,now its usually only on during his water changes, and he will immediately go sulk.

So I wouldn't worry to much, if your water parameters are all good just give them time to adjust. Trust me their bellies will over-ride all else soon enough.

Here's a pic of him playing dead:

Good Luck!

hi there and welcome t ofl.com

oscars have the tendancy to act dead or sulk especially if they get put in a new tank.

lights r just there for plant growth and 4us 2 see.

if possible leave yr lights off for a few days and see if he comes around.as soon as the oscars r happy with their new home and hungry they will cum 2 the top to greet u everytime u pass the tank.

dont stress 2much but keep a close eye on them just 2b safe

u say yr water is spot on not that i doubt u but id would be helpfull if u could provide us with the water test readings.
DONT BUY ON IMPULSE DO SUM HOMEWORK FIRST

LMAO Brian! Good one! Not that I haven't heard such stories before but they way you told it, it sounds to me like the Oscar was showing a perfect performance of The Dying Swan or something, hahaha!

And welcome Sickend!

mine arnt overly excited with the light being on. they prefer it with them off i only turn it on to feed and water changes and the odd hour when i want to sit and watch them or look for any cuts ect as they do alot of high speed chases now and again.

but yeah like others said give them time and they will come and check you out when you go near and maybe yours might dance when there hungry one of mine does which is amuzing. be carefull also as u may not know that they DO jump for there food at times. one of mine has grown fond of jumping recently. normaly for food when im too slow in giving him some hed rather just take it. then theres the times when u hear a big thud then plash which is him jumping about

crazy things oscars haha but you gotta love em. also nice pair you have there be good to see them once they show there full colours

Lol yeah my o's were rather timid when i first introduced them to the new tank. However its only been a short few days and they are already following me around when i pass by the tank. I did my first water change yesterday and both played dead side by side until i was finished. Funniest thing i've ever seen haha.
