TOPIC: Hi from sunny Devon in England

Hi from sunny Devon in England 2 years, 1 month ago #90513

Just wanted to say "Hi". I've not used a forum like this before so it's all new to me. Be gentle with me! LOL.

I'm hoping to learn more about keeping my Ozzies happy and healthy, and pass on any help I might be able to offer in return.

Welcome to our little community Claudia. Whereabouts in Devon are you?

I'm in Colyton between Exeter and Lyme Regis.

Many thanks for the welcome everyone. Great to see so many people from all parts of the world enjoying their Oscars.

These are my first Oscars; Bought 'by mistake' for addition to my mixed community tank from a Pet's At Home store. I noticed the two very pretty 2" fish in a tank and enquired about them. I asked what size they grew to and was told by the shop staff that they'd grow to about 4" when adult. I asked if they were suitable for adding to a mixed tropical aquarium. "Oh yeah... fine." I asked if they required any special care, food, water parameters, etc.... "Oh no. They're fine in a normal tank. Just feed 'em like your other fish...." Guess who leaves the shop with two new additions to the family?! Duh

Got them home, left them acclimatising in the small quarantine tank and fetched the Baensch from the book shelf to look up my new fish. I don't know who I thought was more dumb; Me? For buying the fish without checking up on them beforehand. Or, the shop staff? For giving out such incorrect and irresponsible advice.

Options were, return the poor fish to the shop and risk them being mis-sold again or, and I preferred this option , get a bigger aquarium set up and keep them. Needless to say, we opted for the second choice. We've had the ozzies almost 6 months now and they've grown fast. Ozzy must be 8" now and Bizzy 7". Guess I'll be looking for yet another bigger tank soon.....

Question: Was wondering if there are different types of Oscar? Ozzy has a different shaped head to Bizzy. Ozzy's is gently sloping, whilst Bizzy has a really big hump.

there are different types, but they all refer to colour.
There are just big differences in head and bodyshapes, but they're no special types.
I read about Short Bodied Oscars once, but they just looked stunted.
Not sure if that counts as a different type.
