thought i would introduce myself,im gary 20 from england

been breeding fish for a while now,but only been guppies until i went to the pet store today and saw a amazing oscar,so i came back home went on the net and spotted you guys
Been reading everything and defo sure i want to get a oscar.
the only issue i have is do i go for a baby oscar? or do i go for this large 10 inch one there selling in the pet store?

help me guys lol

also wanted to join so i could use all your brains when i have a issue lol

as for which oscar to buy the decision is yours. there is gratification from growing an oscars from infancy to adulthood but rescuing a mature oscar is rewarding in its own rights. either way if you have any question feel free to ask away and im sure someone will get back to you in no time...........

A very warm welcome to our community Gary. If it's information on oscars you want, you have come to the right place, I can promise you that.

I think your situation is very much the same as somebody who wants to get a dog. They may want to start off with a puppy and have a little bit of fun watching it grow, or go straight to a fully grown oscar so you have a big fish straight away.

I'm sure by now you know that you will need nothing less than 55 gallons if you want an Oscar. Obviously most people want the babies because they are very cute, but if you can give the large o a good home, I'm sure he would appreciate it.

What worries me is people who take these very large fish home and put them in tiny little aquariums. This is unfortunately the downside of being a very large fish, there are only a few people who have aquariums big enough to keep them properly.

Anyway, I'm sure whatever you do, you will really enjoy oscars as much as we all do.

Just remember to shout if you need any help, we are here to help you do it the right way and avoid some of the mistakes many of us made when we first started keeping these great fish.

The Boss explained the facts nicely, and i recommend getting a big tank and a small oscar. Go for the puppy!
I found out that the baby oscar will immediately make use of his whole territory and grow into the tank VERY fast.
Here's a lil' vid of my baby O enjoying a big tank for the first time.



and in a little over a year, he reached 10". There was no need ever to net him since i got him, and he's become very gentle.


My second O was bigger when i got him, but the incredible growthrate makes baby O's my favorite.

I have been in your spot and I have both rescued adults, and I have a big girl I have raised sense she was a baby... And both side of this coin are great!

But if you are getting one Oscar, and it is your first, I would go for the puppy! You become much more attached!
