TOPIC: Just call me JAX...everybody else does

Just call me JAX...everybody else does 1 year, 11 months ago #99059

Hey peeps,

Been on here for a few weeks already, but postponed starting this thread till I got my tank set up. Here's a video taken earlier today after I got everything finished:

175Galon (650liter) tank that I want to add two red oscars into once cycled. Used 250ml of Tetra SafeStart and have 20 danios in there now to do the trick.

Also have a smaller 60liter tank where I'm breeding guppies in for the O's and a smaller 40liter tank to let the small baby guppies grow (away from their cannibalistic parents) lol

Ok...apart from my tanks...my name is Jacques (but most peeps call me Jax) and I live in Centurion, South Africa

My username...Acapella.Foxxy are the two names I'm gonna give my O's.

Anything else...just ask

PS. The large piece of driftwwod with the Java Ferns attached to it is the one that was giving me weeks of trouble concerning leaching of tannins...let's hope that's all over with now

Looks lovely!! nice to meet you Jax

I'd like to hear more about your guppy breeding - is it pretty easy? the parents really eat their young so two tanks are needed?

Breeding guppies are extremely difficult...just add water

All livebearers (guppy, molly, swordtail, etc) eat their fry...fish in general are opportunistic feeders anyway aren't they? You dont need two tanks per say...then again...you dont need two cars either, but its nice to have a normal car and your weekend car. Same with tanks I guess...i'd rather have more than less...

As for breeding guppies...get yourself a guppy breeding trap

I usually buy myself a pair of knee high stockings (no, i'm not a cross dresser, lol), cut of the end...and put it over the bottom as some of the fry are so small they fall through the drilled holes in the trap. Remove the mother and "trap door" after she's given birth.

Thankfully the fry can take fine flake food immediately. After a few days release them into the tank...they grow fast and will be big enough not to be eaten by their parents in a few days.

Hope that helped

Hey there and welcome to OFL.
i hope the danios create enough waste to get your filter cycled.

I have 2 guppy breeders but i never remove the young and the patents may eat some, but enough survive.

Nice Tank setup . Your new Red Oscar will love their new space.

If you have a tank that is already established, it would help to use some of its "Beneficial Bacteria" in establishing the new tank.

I look forward to your next Oscar video.

Am over feeding them a lil...so hopefully the added flakes will help. Should i add a pleco or bristlenose catfish catfish now as well...or wait for the tank to cycle

As a plecofanatic, i'd say introduce the pleco in the cycled tank, not before.

Allthought plecos are hardy fish, i'd recommend some goldfish if the danios aren't cutting it.
