I ask this question because I some how with no intention made my O
unhappy when the light is on in the tank. I would turn the light on
when I cleaned it, and would have to turn it back off or O would just
hide the rest of the night.

This is not a real bad thing as my house is bright and you can see
h/her but the colors sre brighter when the light is on. I have tried
turning the light on for 20 mins everyday but it just doesnt work.

so what do you all do on or off.

i think you have to just let your o,s get used to lights as i have two lights on for most of the day and mine dont worry about them, so from 6 in the morning i have two floresent tubes on, and then at 4 i change to my blue light, some say oscars dont like to much light, but mine dont mind at all, how old were were oscars when you got them, as mine were babies,

I tend to leave my lights on for around four or five hours in the evening. My tank never gets very dark during the day so I just don't see the point of leaving the lights on all day, is just a waste of electricity, after all, your fish don't need the lights on. It's a different ballgame altogether if you're keeping plants .

I only turn my lights on in the evening and if I turn the lights on I move away from the tank so the Oscar can get used to the light ...then around 10 mins later he will feed like a madfish

I had this problem when I started up my 120 gal tank - the light was a lot brighter than the little 29 gal tank setup. The O's hid for a long time. I keep my lights on longer than most people on this site - the area where the tank is set up is dark. I'm selfish, I want to see my babies! Anyway, it took a few weeks but they got use to it and are very active in the tank now. It just takes some getting time.

I keep my lights on from around 10am to about 10pm. My Oscars don't mind the light at all. They are just excited I am getting close to the tank with potentially the food they crave.

You need a poop machine... I'm algae free and my lights are on from like 8 am to around 9 pm.

Mine usually go on about 6 or 7 until about 11 or so...then night lights until morning when everything goes off until early evening again. So essentially, they get about 5 hours of the fluorescent.

i have one t5 TL tube that turns on 9AM until 9PM.
Quarter to nine my blue LED lightlights turn on and the stay on until the next morning 7AM.
plus i got 6x6 white Led spots that are turned on from 10PM to 2 AM.

I get flowers from the electricity company every year, they just love my hobby too!

If found out my fish spook a lot less if the lights in the room are turned on, when the nightlights stay on all night.
Plus i work changing shifts so i sit in front of the tank at night a lot too, and thats no fun when the tank is unlit!
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

I'm in the same boat here Noddy, years ago I stopped leaving the lights completely off because I have lost fish from getting spooked leading to serious injury or getting spooked and jumping out of the tank to their death while lights are off. I have found I can avoid these problems by just leaving some low light on the tank at night while we're asleep.

I agree. Night time is the best time to watch our fish.
