TOPIC: Twitching Oscar!

Twitching Oscar! 1 year, 11 months ago #101595

About two weeks ago I noticed my 2 year old O was acting strange. When i tried to feed him he began to swim upside down and started spinning around. After a while he would stabilize himself. After two days of this I feed him a few frozen peas which he ate. The spinning did slow down and eventually stopped sometime last week. I then noticed a small hole in his lower jaw between his mouth and gill about 1/16 inch in idameter. It is pretty deep. I went to the pet shop and purchased medicated pellets (anti parisite). I feed him this over the past few days in conjunciotn with his regular food. I also noticed that my O has been holding the pellets in his mouth for over a day until they disintegrate. Im afraid he is not eating at all. He also is twitching every 5 to 20 seconds non-stop 24/7. Once again the spinning and swimming upside down has stopped but I'm concerned about the twitching and hole in the gill. What the heck is going on!!! I don't have lots of testing stuff but the water ph is slightly alkaline, I do a 25% water change every two weeks. There are no other fish in the tank. The temperature has been approx 84 recently as it has been warm here in Virginia. Help Help!

hey, there.
Welcome to the site.
We are gonna need some more info to help you out.
How big is your tank?
What kinda filter do you use and what's the flowrate?
Did you clean the filters lately or any other changes in the tank
Can you test for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates and exact pH?
this will help us pinpoint the problem.
Whenever i had twitching fish, it was usually from prolongued exposure to high nitrite levels.

It could be that he has swim bladder infection usually it is filled with fluid and healthy bacteria but when it gets infected the swimming becomes erratic and the fish has issues staying upright.

You weren't doing anything else anyway…

I have a 50 gal tank, fluval 303 canister fileter, I do a 25%-30% water change every 2-3 weeks. There is no ammonia as I have tested for it, the ph is 7.2, I don't have a nitrate test kit so I dont have that info. The water temp is 81. I have a steady air bubble flow into the tank so ther is plenty or oxygen.
I did a substantial water change about a week ago and the twitching has stopped. So maybe there weas a high noitrate level and the water change fixed the problem.
However the problems still continue. My O is'nt eating, his gills are remaining wide open but he is not breating rapidly. He is breating at a normal rate. He is definately lathargic and seems to be hovering near the top of the tank. When I attempt to feed my O. He quickly dashes to the top of the tank as usual and acts like he is starving but when I drop the pellets in the tank he just darts at the food but doesn't take it in his mouth. Previously he would take the food in his mouth and then hold it there for a couple of days without eating it. Very strange.
I also have a snail infestation which was introduced into my tank from a plant which I now regret puttong in my tank.
So the priority is fixing my O. Second, how do I get rid of the snails, there are hundreds of the little buggers!

As long as you do not have a nitrate test, it would be safe to do bigger and more frequent waterchanges.
I do a 50% waterchange weekly, combined with gravelvacuuming.
Only way to tell for sure how much and how often, is to get a nitrate test.
A liquid testset would be your best option and will be more accurate than teststrips.
I try to keep my nitrates below 40 at all times.

As for the snails, i wish i lived near you.
I can never have enough snails for my puffers!

Usually overfeeding a tank will make snail reproduce very fast.
If you want to catch the snails, take a slice of zuchinni, and drop that into the tank.
Leave it in there overnight and in the morning a lot of snails will be on the zuchinni.
Just take the zuchinni and snails out and repeat the process.
Keep in mind that if you have a snail infestation, they will most likely return in time.

Other option is getting loaches, for they eat snails, but as your tank is only 50Gl, you do not want to add anything to your bioload.
What may work, in addition to catching them with a net or zuchinni, is buying some helena snails.
These are known as "Assasin-snail" or snail-eating snails.
they will add some to your bioload, but will be a great help in snail-control.

Your problem is either poor water or swim bladder problems which seems the most likely problem.

If its swim bladder you can buy a treatment for it but it can be hit and miss. The earlier the treatment the greater the chances of success.

Can you test your water for Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

FWIW - Water changes should be no less than 30% each week. They are very sensitive to water quality. What your water tests show is only a part of the equation. It's the water components you can't test for that can cause harm. Weekly water changes help with this.

It was very possible bacterial infection that caused the behavior. Given that the water changes were not performed weekly lends credibility to that.

x2, you are not called SuperOscarMan for nothing!
And like Paul said, 2 years is allready an accomplishment.
My oldest O is not even 2 years of age.
Chin up, take a time out, reconsider, and then restock!
With O's of course...
