TOPIC: freezing you own food

freezing you own food 1 year, 10 months ago #103262

I've got some baby convicts that are almost to big to feed to my bigger fish. What's the best way to freeze them so they, uh... don't grow any more. Should I just bag them and throw them in the freezer, or what?

Re: freezing you own food 1 year, 10 months ago #103263

why would u want to feed such buitful fish to other fish and by freezing them youd have to end up killing them to not cool i understand the feeding them part cause its a swift fast death but by freezing a fish its probly very slow and painful

Re: freezing you own food 1 year, 10 months ago #103300

When you have 700 hundred babies, which is more humane? Letting half of them die from ammonia poisoning because the big fish couldn't eat them fast enough, or getting it over with in a couple of hours? And fish fall asleep before they freeze so they don't feel anything except cold, it the same way with humans.

i would just give them an overdose of some medication because they are so small it shouldt be so cheap look at the euthinasia section of ofl heres the link oscarfishlover.com/fish-euthanasia

This is a tough one because you want to kill your baby convicts but you dont want to do it in a painful way. What i dont understand is why you want to freeze them. Convicts breed like rabbits so just let the parents breed again (assuming you still have them). Rehome the babies, some LFS's will give you a small credit for babies- but they must be at least 1inch (In fact a shop near me said the water round my way was so perfect for convicts that they never but them in as so many people bring in babies)

Dont euthanised them- you dont want the clove oil (or whatever you use) to end up in your oscar!

I've got 6 LFS in the area and none of them will take any of convicts because no one will buy them. I'm freezing them so that I can kill them while they're still small, and then I'll be able to feed them to my big fish for the next couple months. I've have a problem now because I couldn't feed them to the big fish fast enough, I've got 10, 4-6 month old convicts (1.5"-3")and since no one wants them( and I mean NO ONE, I've tried friends, family, LFS, and craigslist), I have them all in a 29 gallon tank with a Magnum 350.

Hey I know I might get flamed for this but going spearfishing I have found the best way to quickly and humanely dispatch a fish it to brain them. Get a sharp poking instrument a small clean nail or similar for the size your working with and lay the fish down and with a quick sharp jab stick the "tool" into its cheek slightly behind the eye. If done correctly the fish's mouth will open up with one last breath and you know it is done. I know it sounds crude but when killing something there is no "glamour" to it, It just has to be done. I have found this method quite efective and after a bit of practice kills on the first hit.

x2, but that will be quite a lot of work on all those babys.
I thought about convict babys for my gar, but the killing them before hand and the risk of me liking them too much, made me rethink.

btw freezing will not put your fish to sleep before their internal organs blow up and explode in their bodies.
Not very humane, allthough i suspect my feeeders get the same freezing treatment, before i buy a bag...

I used to go fishing a lot when i was a kid and a few times we caught trout. After catching them we used to bash them on the top of the head with a metal pole and it used to kill them instantly. So maybe giving the cons a flick with your finger might do it, or alternatively how about putting them in a net and whacking them on a wall although this might take some experimenting on how hard to hit the wall with. Too hard and the fish will end up as mush, not hard enough and you might not kill them
