TOPIC: Feeder fish intervention

Feeder fish intervention 1 year, 10 months ago #103887

Although ive known about HITH i have ignored it for some reason it was only when i saw a little tiny sign of HITH that i decided something needed to be done. So i made a decision to stop feeding my oscar feeder fish. Now i wouldnt say im a violent person but i enjoy my oscar eating things lol lets face it its cooler to feed live food than pellets. So now i dont no wat other live food to feed i was thinking meal worms
wat do you guys think and wat live food do you feed your Oscar

Insects would be best as this is what they eat naturally.
You have to be trusted. By the people that you lie to. So that when they turn their back on you. You get the chance to stick the knife in

my red survived and grew big only on morio and mealworms, earthworms, bloodworms and bugs. He only ate insects for over a year.
Maybugs are a big favorite but you cannot buy those, you have to catch them yourself.
If you want to induce a crazy feeding frenzy, feed the mealworms some white bread and store them at a litlle over roomtemp for some weeks.(f.e.in the hood of your tank)
The mealworms will turn into black beetles and i assure you the O will love those very much. Plus they don't jump.

On other option may be crickets or grasshoppers, but they will jump and escape.
Or if they do not get eaten right away, they will swim off and then hide in the hood, preparing to hide underneath your tank and driving you crazy with the constant chirping...
I heard some folks do extract the hind legs, to keep them from jumping, but I'm not the kinda guy who enjoys that, so i never feed crickets anymore.

I was so glad my red finally started to eat pellets, that i didn't dare to feed worms anymore, for i was affraid he'd go off the pellets again.

I drop in a couple of earthworms from time to time that I find in the garden. But I mainly stick to Hikari Cichlid Staple Pellets. I also do Tetra cichlid crisps occasionally for a little variety. My fish absolutely love the pellets, and kinda of like Noddy said... I don't want to get them too used to live food and have them begin to not like pellets.

You have to be very careful with feeders. I think if you really want to do feeders you should set up a quarantine tank and make sure the feeders are healthy for a few weeks before introduction to your pet Oscars.
