This has been going on for about 3 weeks now. My beautiful Oscar fish Thisbe, has been getting random nicks all over her, we took the shells out and other potentially harmful decorations but nothing has helped. She has about 3 holes under her eyes and white sploches and holes in her fins and white sploches on her belly. Thisbe also has a huge nick beside her head. This has not happened to Jarome yet and all of the nitrate levels and stuff are perfect, the tank is clean and we do a 20 percent water change once a week. We had purchased Thisbe from another Oscar owner and we are not to sure how clean they kept their tank, so it could be because of them, But Ireally want to know what is wrong with her!

I think you will have to post a photograph. Unless things have changed dramatically without me knowing, HITH is still not fully understood unlike conditions such as ICK which is why we often have great difficulties in helping people. However, the best way to prevent and cure it, is to keep your water in good condition and feed a healthy diet. Having said this, I believe that Oscars may well develop HITH quite some time after being exposed to poor water conditions, or fed on an unhealthy diet. So I can understand where you are coming from when you say he keep your water in good condition

It is easy to post photos, just use photo bucket
Could you please try and get some more photos, maybe face on? I would not like to say for sure whether it is hith, the area under the eyes do look somewhat suspicious.
As for the white bits, I'm not quite sure if that is ick. It could be tiny particles that are sticking to the fish. Have you checked ammonia & nitrites? Sometimes if the water quality is not so good, fish will develop a protective slime coating that will attract particles that start sticking to them, they will look rather dirty. A few more photos if you can.

The marks under the eyes is early stage HITH. THe cure is to keep your water quality as good as possible. nitrates need to be below 20, the lower the better. Step up your water changes to 40% about 3 or 4 times a week. Im not sure on the white spots but they look like they might be bubbles caught from an air stone or filter outlet

(sigh @ hith) There is also a small hole in her fin. We adopted this fish from a previous owner and she came with these marks and being that we have a healthy tiger oscar named Jarome we were afraid it might be something contagious. Mind you she has really put on weight since we adopted her. In the last few months I figure she has grown an inch. Both,Jarome and ourselves have become quite attached to her I hope we can stop this from getting worse.

I couldn't see anything that really worries me. If you keep the water quality good at all times, no ammonia or nitrite, and make sure your nitrate levels don't get too high and there is no reason why this fish should not recover fully. You could get some liquid vitamins and soak of food in them, this can always give a little bit of extra added help.

Thank you guys so much! I really appreciate all of the help and tips! I really love my oscars and would hate for anything to happen to them! I hope that Thisbe will make a full recovery!

now that's the spirit.
we often study our fish with our noses pressed to the window and i worried quite a lot when suspecting hole in the head.
Lately one of our members stated: You aren't a real oscarfishlover unless you posted a thread about worrying over HITH!
I know i did, and found out about the oscars sensory pits, which are totally normal and learned something new.
And of course worried for nothing.
Like suggested, keep your water as good as posssible and i'm sure things will be allright and will heal just fine.

Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!
