My pleco knows to come out when the oscar is eating pellets and he eats the bits that float to the bottom.

my oscar does this too, i think its probably quite normal... unfortunatley my plec doesn't yet have the brains or the size 2 come out wen ozzy is fed so i'm in the same boat having to move plants and ornament around to clean my substrate.

Depends on the species. I should have gotten a smaller plec like a bristlenose or something but my oscar is too large right now so any smallish plec would most likely go down the hatch....or worse...halfway down the hatch.

Mine do this all the time... Red does it especially when I have fed him too many pellets over a course of feedings. He likes variety. Opie goes around eating what he spits out through his gills. Then the pleco eats whatever is left.

I think this is my 900th post ! Where's the bar !?!?!
