2 new oscars 1 not eating .other eats all i put in 1 year, 10 months ago #104954

Dear All

I m new to keeping fish and have got two oscars... the tank is pretty much cycled.. with i just keeping the nitrates level to less than 40 ppm.... the problem is 3 days ago i had got two healthy oscars one albino and other tiger... albino is eating away all the other guy's share too... though both are active and swim together.. most of the times touching each other... i m worried of the poor guy starving..

hey there and welcome.
I had the same problem when i introduced a new tiger into the existing oscars tank.
The tiger behaved like it never had gotten any food at all.
Splashing and jumping and grabbing all the food in sight, leaving hardly any for the much bigger red o.
Feeding in 2 different spots may help ,as well as mixing sinking with floating pellets.
I threw in a handful of of those to begin with, and the pellets will float around and will spread, so both fish will get their share.
Or mixing some mealworms with pellets may help.

My tiger calmed down after a month or so, and finally seems to understand that he doesn't have to fight to get the most food.
Now both of them come up to the surface with their mouths open, so i can toss the pellets in...
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

Welcome to the site... Noddy hit it right on the nose. I have a 11" Red and just added a 4" Albino to the tank. The Albino wasn't getting any food for about the first week, other than what Red spit out. He quickly learned to look at the other end of the tank where I was dropping food in for him. Now they feed together quite nicely. The Albino even steals food from Red sometimes! They will be fine... and they can go days without eating.. weeks sometimes. So don't panic unless you start to see other health issue.

You mentioned the tank was "pretty much cycled". Make sure to check your levels regularly and do your water changes... this will keep your babies very happy. A cycled tank is a must... and it can slip away from you quickly causing a lot of problems and maybe the death of one of your babies.

Welcome again... ask as many questions as you'd like!

Seeing as you added the fish only 3 days ago i wouldnt worry. Oscars often dont eat for the first few day after adding them. Do as has been suggested and feed at 2 different places at the same time. If the oscar isnt eating after a week repost
