TOPIC: Lateral line

Lateral line 1 year, 9 months ago #106211

So i was watching shark week and they were talking about the sharks lateral line and i was like WOAH my fish got those. they said the sharks could hear with those very low decibles now im not a sound expert but idk what that means. I also read that article about fish can hear and idk. So when i had my friends over and we were blasting my radio idk if that meant my fish were getting desterbed by it. does anyone know just tryn t get a feel for the fish cause ive noticed that other fish have em to. Also i know its completly normal i just want to know if the noise upsets them or desterbes them in anyway. Also if they have the line how do they hear from a line and not by ears. THANKS EVERYONE

the lateral line functions as our eardrum, and it can sense very small vibrations.
I talk a lot to my fish and am convinced that they do "hear" me.
And i'm sure they hear my music as well, but they are certainly not disturbed by that, allthough i may be pretty loud from time to time.

I'm sure my bass is louder that yours, so don't worry.
I have the doors of the stand trembling from time to time...

sure it would be less disturbing if i didn't play music, but with all tanks being in the livingroom, my fish got no other option, then to enjoy the music with me...

Opera...
My fish are into Dubstep and Drum'n'Bass, so there's enough bass to go round.

They might be able to hear really heavy bass (but only if the tank was shaking) but i doubt they can hear you talking. I think it was OFL who said he shouted at his tank (would of loved to see that- bring on the men in white coats) and his fish didnt show any signs on 'hearing' anything.

The lateral line is used to feel disturbances in water. Fish use it so they can 'feel' if a larger fish is around. This is why you shouldnt bang your tank, your fish will panic and even jump quickly
I can't get no sleep

Cmon, Delboy, don't spoil my husband's fantasy...
They'll think he's crazy, when talking to his fish.

My fish only get disturbed when I listen to Disturbed. Something about David Draiman's voice. They do love the band Fishbone though. When Freddies Dead comes up on the Ipod, they're lovin it.
