TOPIC: Oscar Poop

Oscar Poop 4 years, 3 months ago #10736

Is Oscar poop supposed to float or sink?

I heard somewhere that if it floats, the fish has digestive problems. Anyone know?

Not that I sit there and watch my fish crap:lol: that when I have noticed them doing it, it normally sinks. If you think about it, not all human waste floats, it depends on the consistency (what a lovely subject to talk about:S )

I have noticed Oscar wastes floating on occasions. As for digestive problems if Oscar Fish waste does float, I've never heard that one before

I find it very rare for my oscars poo to be floating around the tank, if it does float it indicates fat in the poo. If you feed very fatty food (which you shouldnt) i suppose it may float. Oscars have very inefficient stomachs and so what comes out isnt very well digested. I am not the only one who has seen a tan kmate that isnt an oscar eat oscar poo. I used to have a parrot fish and i saw it once chase my oscar around after the poo that was hanging out YUK!!!!

Well, here is a list of the foods that I rotate for them on a daily basis:

Hikari Gold Pellets (2X/day)
Earthworms (1x/day)

And one selection of frozen food per day from the following:

Bloodworm
Glassworm
Frozen Krill
Beef heart
Cichlid chow
Emerald entre
Spirulina enriched brine shrimp

This is a good variety, right?

That looks like a good diet to me. My oscar poop floats on occasion but I see a lot of my Pleco's poop will float so I'm sure it just depends on what you eat and how your body breaks it down I really doubt its anything to worry about. When it does float though I find myself scooping the tank with a net because it looks awful!

my O's poo has always sunk, even almost defiantly so against the weak draw of 45 ft of Python suction.

I feed almost strictly on pellets. I leave the other stuff as more rare treats. The pellets has a well-balanced range of protein, fiber, fat, vitamins, and minerals to keep them healthy without ever tasting flesh in non-pellet form in their lives.

I use treats to get what I want. Happiness after water changes. Brighten the mood when a bit sulky/lazy. The less I feed treats, them more readily pellets are eaten (and the better eaten/less expelled).

I look at it this way, if I eat one of my favorite treats, white chocolate, every day ... it doesn't seem as special or indulgent as it does if it is once a week or month.

My O's poo is of various colors ... but it is directly related to the food. Sometimes shrimp can make it lighter, sometimes red it seems, otherwise, it is pretty consistent.

Just like if you had some food coloring or colored drink/candy in excess

Just watch for things like an empty casing like look.

My O's poop is getting quite big as he gets older ...

Gee, you never stop learning, I didn't even know Oscar poop can float at times. Guess it would have freaked me out if I saw that suddenly, lol.
If I were a guy, I\'d have probably needed only 30% of the amount of words to say this
