TOPIC: oscar sticking head out of water

oscar sticking head out of water 4 years, 3 months ago #10746

My oscar is 2 1/2 not more than 3 inches. there has been a couple changes going on in the tank with the ammonia and nitrite levels dropping down a vast amount. thankfully he is starting to get out of his moping stage again. but he now is sticking his head above water randomly and every time i go over to the tank he runs right to the front when i pick up the food container (he now knows what this is and gets very excited ammongst seeing it) he goes back the the top again and he eats every time. This is the second time hes eaten, that i have seen, since the ammonia and everything dropped could he just be extremely hungry or is that a sign of ammonia poisoning this has just started today. His gills are fine doesnt appear to be breathing heavy so i am unsure of what his problem might be.

One of my oscars does the same thing whenever he eats also, but pellets only. Sometimes his whole head will breach and then he'l plop back down. As long as he's eating I wouldn't worry about anything.

Your oscar has realised that you and the container mean food - its normal behaviour. Oscars always act like they havent eaten food for a week. He is coming to the top so he can get the food just that little bit earlier!

Your oscar will come to the front of the tank everytime you go near it as he will associate you with food. They are professional beggars
I can't get no sleep

small oscars will eat a lot, they totally staff themselves, but as they grow they eat less, when my Tiger is hungry he attacks the empty snail shells and the gravels, bashes the tank glass and even attacks the pleco! he just wnats to tell me 'I AM HUNGRY! GIVE ME FOOD OR ELSE.............!!!!:angry:
100 US Gallon Tank - 1 Tiger Oscar (Tiger);
1 Common Pleco

30 Gallon Tank - 4 Angels (1 Veil Tail, 1 Albino, 2 Marble)

hehe, my O will sometimes grab some gravel and spit it at the glass for my attention.

I have saw Os who do this as well, it was quite an aggressive Oscar actually.

Mine will catch it as I drop it, timing the drop and the opening of that large mouth usually quite well. They can draw in water like vacuums!

Mine recognizes the difference between the silver/white bio-gold+ bag, the red gold bag, the FD krill container, and the frozen bloodworm pack. The level of excitement for the treats far outdoes the reaction for the food. I can tell when he doesn't want to be bothered with the smaller bio-gold+ pellets as well (which in a few weeks he will have to get over it and eat them anyway, no more gold).

now that your water is good, and being that your O is at the fast growing juvenile stage, he will be quite hungry and eat more than you would expect something that size to eat
