so i live on a saltwater canal and i have little guppies and small cleaner shrimp living in it... they are VERY easy to catch and can definitely be taken down by an Oscar. i really saw that there SHOULD be no problem in feeding them these little guys, but i just read an article on here made by the site creator saying that even small amounts of saltwater are bad for an Oscar or any freshwater fish because it like ruins their kidney... but i was thinking, would it be OK if i fed them these guys? its not like their breathing in the saltwater, and its not like the shrimp and guppies are 100% salt, and of course they might have a little more sodium in their body but its not like its the only thing i would feed them. i know i can get freshwater shrimp and guppies at the store but they can get quite expensive. and to wrap this up, can i just give them these guys as a treat sometimes as like a human and candy, or is it way too unhealthy?

I dont know what other members think but i would never take that chance, i dont know anything about there insides either but all i know is that wouldnt be what they eat in the wild. Oscars wouldnt come in contact with saltwater anything so they thats how it should stay. If your looking for a nice treat get shrimp pellets that are freeze dried. But if you are willing to take the chance of your oscar dying or internaly injured then go ahead we can only say so much though but before you make your decision wait for other members to reply.

I dont see it being a problem as long as its a treat however there is the risk that if they have any illness they might be passed onto your oscar. Personally i wouldnt risk it- i mean its not like shop bought food is expensive. I wouldnt worry about the salt levels if you make it a treat (say once every 2 weeks)

Brine Shrimp (live) live completely in salt water. I have fed my oscars live Brine Shrimp with mixed results. I think most of my mixed results came because they were too young, and I over fed them (I learned my lesson), but, I have seen all of my freshwater fish consume fresh, live, salt water live stock, even the clown loaches ate them, and they came out OK.

As with everything in the aquatic world, it depends on your roll of the dice + your fish genetic + the food you feed them. It's a thin line between a wonderful treat and disaster.
