Great! Keep us posted. Maybe get creative with a photo or video step by step. Lead by example Sir.

I've been feeding my fish home made food for around 4 years now. Its really good as you can make sure ur fish gets all the nutrients needed. But you'll need to beef up the filtration a little or perform partial water changes a bit more often as there are bound to be scraps. If you have a pleco with a healthy appetite it wont be much of an issue. And feed them a little at a time until you have an idea how much they'll actually eat. Because unlike pellets its very difficult to scoop home-made food out of the water.

I half cook the fish/shrimp before grinding them. It keeps the smell on the low.

Here's my recipe:

Half boil 125g each of mackerel/prawns/ so that it becomes easy to remove all the bones. Boil an egg and a clove of garlic. Shred and boil 125g each of green peas, spinach, oatmeal and carrot so that they become soft. Add 2 tablespoons of brewer’s yeast, 3 drops of anise extract. Grind everything in the mixer but don't make it puree. It should be a lil chunky.

Dissolve some gelatin in warm water and add this to the mix and blend it a lil more. Allow the mixture to sit for a minute or two before pouring it into the tray. Then keep it in the fridge. After a day place the bags in the freezer

I used to add cod liver oil capsules as vitmain supplements when the fish were a bit smaller.

It does take a bit of work but its worth it. I hope this was helpful in some way.

and one more small bit of advice. Dont get the fish used to only home made food. Feed them whichever commercially available food you use at least every two days. This is because you may not always have the time, energy or resources to make the home-made food. Its always wise to get ur fish used a variety of food. That way you'll have others options to fall back on if one runs out.

That sounds like a pretty good process KS. I have never tried to make the homemade food for my fish. It sounds like it would be worth a shot to try. I was always just worried I would spend all the energy, time , and money... then the fish wouldn't even like the stuff.

thanks for the info...

well from the stuff i personally used its no extra money. its all stuff i keep in the house anyway. i need to figure out how to do it with the gelatin because it will keep it together better im sure.

@cebosound

well i got the basic idea from many fish sites, but i experimented with my own ingredients until i came up my own recipe. I had plenty of spare of time and lots of ideas. I once added beet-root to try and enhance the red on my oscar, but instead of the oscar the water became red instead The whole batch had to go into the dump. I was disappointed and ticked off. I continued with only pellets for a month. Then i went back to my old recipe.

but unless you make mistakes you'll never learn right? so take a chance at least once!
