So, yesterday when I am at home for lunch, I notice Ash my red oscar has truly "red" gills. He had always looked the orange red up until yesterday. Is this a normal color?

Looks normal to me... Color changing due to maturity? How old is he?

Keep an eye on it, and as long as your water is good, I wouldn't worry!

ah yes, the old age question

I got him in December and he was a good 4" long then, so I am guessing he is nearing a year old now?

he is about 9.5" long now. The only way I can tell is when I look at him from the side of the tank, he is longer than 1/2 the depth of the tank, and the tank is 18" deep. So, he has to be > 9"

He did enjoy a piece of asparagus for the first time the other day. Maybe that has deepened his orange to red?

It is beautiful, just different, and not been there before.

I looked at Snow this afternoon too at lunch. The red in him is starting to permiate the tail and back end of his body more too. Maybe it's the diet, maybe it is they are close to the same age, and entering that stage of maturity. It is really striking against Snow's white body.
