TOPIC: Hi peeps, what type or colour are my oscars please

Hi peeps, what type or colour are my oscars please 1 year, 8 months ago #111998

Hi yalll
What type or colour are my oscars please
I bought them as standard Oscars, at about an inch long. They are about a year old now and 7/8 inch. I just wondered because they look like they are interested in breeding. Not bothered if they do or dont really. They are the olivey/dark bluey colour as normal but the orange is very orange almost red? And there spots go all the way down to end of there tails where most oscars colourin seems to stop some where near the black blob at begining of tail. Are they standards? Tigers? Red? Oscar expert needed please X

if it the fish in your avatar, its a tiger oscar

Your fish are not looking to breed, they are too young. They usually dont start to breed until they are 18 months old.

If they are lip locking its a pecking order thing. They may also be digging but oscars do this when they are not breeding

oh cool. they keep clearin the bottom or the tank and kind of wriggling there sides along the bottom? Whats this? Ps ive put more pics on, sorry they are not brill as front of tank glass needs a wipe ooops! Did a water change today and didnt wipe it, not like me usually. Also how long do you think they will be ok in this tank? Its on pics. Does it need anything else without wasting water space? XXX thankyou x

You have 2 tiger oscars and a plec

Now the bad news, 60g isnt big enough for all those fish. 55g is needed for 1 oscar, 75g for 2 oscar minimum but you will need to do lots of water changes to maintain good water quality, and thats without the plec.

To keep all 3 you need a minimum a 100g but more like 120g.

Either get a bigger tank ASAP (oscars grow quick) or rehome the plec and an oscar

Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!

I will be getting a 600 litre tank i have seen around christmas. The oscars are around 6/7 inch and pleck is about 8. Will they be ok till christmas? Or do i need to lose somebody now? Dont want them to become ill But if they can hang on 2-3 month i will have a bigger home for them x

not good either... oscars need more swimming space, not necessarily deep
water.... i can only agree with the mods comments earlier....

with a lot of works and dedication... yes they will be fine till christmas...
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Its difficult to say. test water weekly and if your nitrates go above 40 then you will needd to do bigger or more frequent water changes. You may find yourself doing 3 large water changes a week

If your ammonia or nitrite go above 0 then you will need more filtration unless something has gone wrong with your filter

When I had a large plec in my 55 gallon with my oscar it was essential to do at least 3 changes a week, and even with good filtration the nitrates would be a continual issue.

I think in this case 3 nice sized changes a week are pretty essential.
