Your oscar gulping at the
surface could be an indication of a problem with your water quality. Generally they gulp and beg at the glass, not so much at the surface. What kind of tank and filtration are you running?
I would, like the others mentioned, avoid the goldfish or any store bought feeders at all costs. It is virtually useless nutritionally and can cause disease, and it is not necessary for their health or well-being to have them engage in predatory behavior with live foods. If you want to feed live try insects, worms, and shrimp...much better nutritionally, and little to no risk of disease.
I like to use the chiclid pellets as the staple, add in some frozen white fish and sardines (not canned), mysis shrimp, cocktail shrimp, beefheart cubes, earthworms, mealworms, mussels, lobster chunks, freeze dried krill, crickets, and the rare veggie like peas. I'll also grab some japanese beetles from outside on occasion, although not too often as I want to avoid any pesticides they might have on them. If you go to the supermarket you can pick up great seafood for alot cheaper and more quantity than pet store bought prepackaged fish/shrimp etc. You can pick up some raw jumbo shrimp or prawns, or fish, and cut them up into bite sized chunks and freeze them.
