I am curious as to your first oscar purchase.

How long ago was it?
How big was your first oscar?
What type of Oscar was it?
Did you buy more than one?

What kind (size) of tank was your first oscar tank?

Just some questions that ran through my head today.

I will start, Mine was a 55 gallon for a black tiger oscar last year. One oscar only, First tank I'd had in 10 years.
4xOscars
1xBlood Parrot
2xJDs (pair)
5xClown Loaches
1xPleco

265 Gallons (84x24x30)
36" T5 Light for shading, sunlight effects
300 Gallon rated Living Color wet-dry sump
3L of SeaChem Matrix + Bioballss, ceramic rings etc...

i started raising oscar as food stuff...fast growing and taste good...
i am not aware it was an oscar. i just thought it looks like a grouper ...
when i got to know it was an oscar, i've got two lemon type, and keep them
with two black pangasius in 2006... in 48 x 21 x 18 tank....

2 years ago this week i bought my first Oscar.
It was 2 inches the most when i got it, and i only bought one.
The second one , my Tiger, was added when my red was 1,5 years of age.

My 180Gl tank was converted from a coldwater tank to a tropical tank, just for getting my oscar.
I rehomed all the carp and goldfish, that were getting too big anywayz, and only left the 3 plecos, a green sunfish and a Chinese algae eater in the tank and got 6 additional SD- babies.
The sunfish died by my mistake, the algae eater got eaten by my o, and one pleco went to another tank, but the rest are still with her in the same tank.
I added my oscar when the tank was running for a year.
She's never been netted since her introduction and has gained 9" since i got her.

I bought my first oscar about 7 years ago, it was a 2 inch tiger oscar, with a convict tankmate and a plec.

The tank was a 3ft x 15in x 15in which is about 30g UK.

I was badly advised by a LFS and the oscar and the other fish all died due to (what i now know) poor water quality.
I can't get no sleep

i started with 2 oscars as rescues. they were about 6 inches in length and i took them out of a 20 long and put them into my 55. this lasted for about one month. then i got a 180 gallon for them. since they looked so small in that 180 by themselves i needed a fast growing tankmate for them so in my infinite stupidity i bought 2 more oscars as tankmates. as they matured it became apparent that to maintain the water quality and keep aggression in check with four oscars would be next to impossible so i purchased another 220 gallon and through trial and error finally was able to break them down into 2 males and 2 females.
through the years i have also collected a varied assortment of central american cichlids as well and now have way to many tanks....

but after all is said and done i dont think i would do anything different if i was to do it again........

Awesome stories. Necro, I did something similar to you. I even read somewhere once that you either buy one Oscar, or 6 oscars (in a 150-180) so there could be no territory issues

My infinite wisdom told me I should be able to keep 4 oscars in a 120... ROFL LOL

I gave two of them away

Now my infinite wisdom has me with 2 oscars, a flowerhorn and a blood parrot, (not to mention the 5 loaches) and thus the need for the 240L (8 ft long). Luckily, only the BP is sexually mature and is the only one with territory issues.

i hope things work for you in the 240 but i have some reservation about the flowerhorn. if he decides he no longer wants any company you might just wake up one morning and find you have an 8 foot single species tank.......

Lots of people do. I have some reservations too. I have hope though. All fish are different. I am keeping a 90 gallon around, so, if he gets too frisky (which I will watch closely every day) I will move him to his own tank, or sell him for a mere $2000.00.

I will not do anything that will allow any of my fish to suffer.

I first bought 2 Baby Oscars. They were about 1 and a half inches long. One Lituno and one Tiger. I put. The babies in a cycled 60 gallon. My Lutino can be seen in the POTM winners, but sadly the Tiger did not grow at all and died a short time later. Sense then I have rescued 3 adults and various other aquatic messes. LOL... But I am REALLY having a baby fit. So we will see.
