Its just of those things oscars do. It can be linked to the breeding ritual but it can also be an agression thing, like establishing a pecking order
I can't get no sleep

From what i've seen it appears to be a form of Oscar to Oscar communication for many different reasons. I first saw it amongst two 5" oscars when one of them caught a tough case of Ick from a feeder fish (he was a hog and ate them all before the other O). It was so sick that it would lay on the bottom of the gravel and the other oscar would lay next to it. They would lay head to tail and vibrate the bottom ends of the dorsal fins back and forth. Another time I saw it was with a young 3" oscar who would do that to newcomers to the tank before chasing them or attacking them to remain on top of the pecking order.

New to Oscars, only had them since about summer of \\\'07. Finally got my own Jan, \\\'08 after my b-day. His name is Ghost and he is still a baby. Plan to get a larger tank when he gets older and I have the funding for it.

My O does that often while I sit near the tank! I don't think it's aggression as he likes my company very much...well, most of the time!!
