TOPIC: Getting an Oscar.....soon!

Getting an Oscar.....soon! 4 years, 1 month ago #12557

Well hey all. I've been looking at this website and I really like it and I have been looking for a new fish for my 29 tank.

And I know it recommended that it is like a 55 or 70 for 1 oscar but how long could I keep two juvenile oscars in my 29. They wouldn't be any larger than probaly 3 inches when I would get them. I would get a bigger tank of course but how long would the two last in there.

And I have had Convicts for awhile so I understand the basics of like keeping a fish and water changes and all but I have a question about the biological filtration part. I just have tested the water for ammonia and nitrate and nitrite and ph and they all are up to par and good. And that's because I have an African clawed frog in there for the past 3 months or so, but when I do get the Oscars should I like change all of the water or soemthing. I don't know if it will affect the fish or not, and of course the ACF will be moved by then when the oscars some.

Well that's about it for now, lol. Thanks for any answers I appre3ciate it.

welcome to the site

oscars grow an inch or so a month so a 29 should be ok for about 2 month before you need to move them. you should do water tests to be certain. as soon as you start getting ammonia readings or your nitrates raise above 40 before your schedualed water change you should get them into a bigger tank.

btw make sure your new tank is cycled before moving your oscars into it.
personally i would just get the bigger tank now and eliminate the stress to your new o's from moving them to often

good luck to ya
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

There is 2 problems you can get with 2 oscars in a 29g tank. The 1st is you will get a result for ammonia (should always be zero) which is poisonous to oscars. This means you dont have enough filtration. This can be avoided by getting extra filtration.

The other problem is that your nitrates will get too high. You reduce nitrates by doing water changes. 2 oscars (when they get bigger) in a 29g will mean you doing water changes every day just to keep the nitrates below 40. With 2 oscars in a 29g it is almost impossible to keep the nitrates below 40 which is why there is a recommended minimum tank size for oscars

My advise is get the bigger tank ASAP or rehome your oscars now.

In answer to your question of how long they can be in a 29g , test your water weekly before a water change and if you find the nitrates are above 40 then either increase how often or how much water you change. When you find you cant keep the nitrate below 40 then its time to get the bigger tank. It is better to get the bigger tank now and not expose your oscar to nitrates above 40
