TOPIC: oscars are pale

oscars are pale 4 years ago #12797

Hey guys I just setup a 55 gallon tank to grow oscars. I purchased the CYCLE liquid along with 6 feeder fish for the first 2 days. 1 feeder fish died and It's been 2 days already and the guy from petsmart said that my tank should be ready. I bought 2 tiger oscar fish about 4" length wise and the fish have been pale since the second i put them in the water. Every time i approach to the tank they seem to get scared and go toward the end of corner. I have about 4 plants in there and I'm looking into decorating the tank more... are the fish still getting used to the new tank? I'm also planning on feeding them frozen blood worms and dry food, but I don't think they will eat anytime soon.. any suggestions would be helpful.. I hope my fish aren't sick!

unfortunately this is just another prime example of someone giving terrible information. For a start, your tank isn't big enough for two Oscars. Secondly, your tank will take around six weeks to cycle properly. the bacteria in the bottle does not perform miracles. They do not instantly cycle your tank, that just isn't possible. To a certain extent, they do work, but from my experience, only with very small fish, not messy fish like Oscars. Have you got yourself a water testing kit? It is vitally important you have a testing kit, especially with a new tank. You need to know what the water is doing, for all you know, the fish might be swimming around in a toxic soup

so please get yourself a water testing kit and tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. You will probably have to do regular water changes to keep the ammonia down as well. Anyway, we're here if you want any help

You have been given some bad advice, however you have posted on here so you will get some good advice.

When oscars are added to a new tank they often are nervous for a few day, they will get used to you soon

The problem you have is your tank isnt cycled, which means you will have ammonia in the water (from fish waste). ammonia is posionous to oscars and can result in long term problem or even death. Its not a good sign that one of your feeder fish died. What you need to do is get a test kit for Ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. In a cycled tank ammonia, nitrite should be zero and nitrate below 40

I would suggest you do 25% water changes everyday, this will keep the ammonia down. Dont forget to use a dechlorinator

You will need a bigger tank to keep 2 oscars. They will need a minimum of 75g but 100g would be better

Hey guys I'm reporting back. I popped in a frozen blood worm in the tank and the Oscars seemed fine eating/fighting over the food. I took some sample water into the store today and It showed that the water is fine. I understand my tank is too small to keep 2 oscars fish, but I did forget to mention that I'm looking into setting up a 120 gallon tank. One of the oscars seems fine, but the other one is pale.. Every time i approach to the tank they seem to be frightened and hide behind the plants, but slowly they're approaching closer as I drop in blood worms. And yes I will perform a water change tomorrow, but I hope it doesn't frighten them anymore then they are right now.

Oscars do hide away when you first get them until they get used to their surroundings

As for you test results can you post the actual results as some fish shops have a loose definition of what is fine. It has been said on here many times that a shop has said the water is fine yet when they post the results the water wasnt fine. Get yourself a test kit for Ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero and nitrate below 40
