Ok as I said I had a oscar with a problem almost the same. it had a fight with a much stronger fish that Broke its jaw and it looked like your fish dose. But the gill on my fish looked ok and not concave like your fish. I could see a hairline crack in the lip of my fish where the jaw bone was broken. I treated it with melafix and was told it could servive a broken jaw and repiar ok. this was not the case with my fish as it couldnt feed for 2weeks so I made a choice to kill the fish and not prolong any more pain and suffering.this could be the same as your fish has suffered, A broken jaw? check at the point of the bottom part of the V in the lip for a split. As your fish is still feeding it could be something else?? Has it always looked ok before??

i got 2 fishes of the same size n age,few days back 1 of the fish had the lip like dis,its was OK before...
now i c a difference in the size and color of the fish, this one is little smaller in size and the color is a little faint too....
i again checked the jaw,it doesn't have a crack...
but the other fish is quiet dominating regarding food, this one is a little slow, but when hungry if fetches the food fast...
but it still swims fine eats fine...
m quiet worried for it,i badly want it to get fine...

Do you mean the fish was ok before the damage with no sign of any problem. one day you just noticed it. If this was the case then I would guess its been in a fight and has a broken jaw. if the fish was like this when you got it, it could be deformed from birth and will never get well. you will have to choose if to keep it or not. A deformed fish will always be bullied, Thats life. i dont know of any i'llness that will do this sort of damage??Maybe someone else dose??

ya,the fish was fine b4...
but it took few days to have this u shaped lip, like a month or so...the usually fight sometimes...
i doubt that it a birth disorder...
if any kind of care to be taken plz let me know, or any kind of medication...
i have no vet who is ready to come home and see it,they ask me get it to their clinic, but taking the fish to the clinic will be alot of stress for the fish...
n thanx for helping me with this...

If it took a month to develop i would say that the fish had a small deformity that got worst over time, I take it the fish is still growing, how old is it?? If this is the case then again you have the choice to live with it as the fish seems ok in genral or to kill the fish humanly. how distressing do you find looking at it. i dont think there is anything you could do to make it better. a vet may be how to carry out surgary and put it right but this would be costly. Sorry

I have seen this twice before in fish shops(different shops), both were small (bout 3 inches) and were returned. I asked both times how this can happen and both times i was told it is either from a deformity or from fighting. If its a deformity then it isnt going to get better and may get worse. If its from fighting it may heal, its just a waiting game.

If the fish cant eat then euthanasia is the best option. If the fish is eating then its your decision whether to keep it or not.

As you can imagine fish shops find it very difficult to rehome these deformed fish so please remember this when deciding if you are gonna take it to a shop. I can imagine a situation where a shop may kill a deformed fish that they cant sell (or even give away) as it is not profitable to keep especially when its a fish that gets as big as an oscar! I can also see a situation where someone with big fish may take a deformed oscar as live food for the big fish, so please take this into consideration when deciding if to return your fish to a shop!

This is a difficult situation you find yourself in, good luck with your decision

Thats great.. just cos this fish is deformed a little you dont need to do away with it. Its eating ok and is not being bullie to much so it should live fine like this.. But please dont pin too many hopes on it getting back to normal, i dont think this will happen but i'll keep a eye out so post a reply if you see any change. Good luck

It looks like a cross between a parrot fish and an oscar, now we all know parrot fish are hybrids, maybe a small chance you're O has a bit of parrot in it!!It sure looks like 1 with the mouth and gills.Just a possibility.
