TOPIC: My baby Oscar wont eat enough..

My baby Oscar wont eat enough.. 3 years, 9 months ago #14783

I have 2 little babies Harold (lemon oscar) and Dililah (albino tiger) The albino tiger oscar is very very skinny. The lemon oscar eats like a pig, but the albino will not eat much and is very skinny. She eats every now and then but not like the lemon. I feed them a variety of stuff so its not like she isnt getting different types of food. I moved them into the 75 gallon tank 2 weeks ago which they are still alittle shy. Im starting to get worries because of how skinny she looks. ANy idea's

as long as the albino is eating something i wouldnt worry to much yet. im not saying everthing is ok but maybe it just doesnt eat as much as the other. when i got my red and albino they were about the same size and the red ate like a horse but the albino just ate sparingly. this was in febuary and now the red still eats a lot and the albino doesnt but theyre both happy and healthy. for the record the red is about 3 inches bigger than the albino but like i said both are healthy.

my new little albino is quite the opassite lol..when i feed both oscars the albino will be right there jumping and diving to get as many pellets in his mouth before my red oscar eats it. my albino is 2 inches and my red is 6.. albino has a nice fat belly.

i think if your fish was hungry it would eat. maybe most albinos are just small eaters

Maybe my little albino is still getting use to the new tank but I think she was even doing this before I moved her. She acts like she is healthy swims around with the lemon but just looks paper thin. I would hate to see something happen to her because the lemon and her get a long awesome..Its like they are already a pair...

As long as the albino is eating something i wouldnt worry for the moment, just keep up with your water changes and keep an eye on things

I do a 20-40% water change every sunday, its way more then I need to but oh well.. Yup she eats here and there but not like my lemon he just has an empty stomach all the time lol..SHe looks happy though so im not stressin much..I think they are boy and girl so that was my main concern because I want some O babies lol..

The only way to know for sure that you are doing enough water changes is to test your water for nitrates. If they go above 40 BEFORE a water change then you are either not doing enough water changes(do bigger or larger water changes) or are over feeding

it must be nice to only have to do one 20-40 per week and its more than enough. i have to do 2 30%(thats about 55 gallons) water changes per week to keep my nitrates down to were i want them(mind you thats below 20).
i feed alot but i want them to grow and be healthy. i sacrifice water cahnges for over feeding a bit but to me its worth it. most people unfortunatly dont check there water regularly and think because it looks clear its fine. bottom line is the only way to know when and how often you need your water changed is to test your nitrates
