congratulations on your new Oscar. Juvenile Oscars will change color as they get older. At the moment, I would feed your Oscar three times a day. There are loads of things you could feed him, small pellets, Krill, shrimp, bloodworm. Remember that even though 2 1/2 inches isn't that big, they still have big mouths and can probably eat bigger food than other fish of the same size. Just be careful though, baby Oscars are absolute pigs and will cram as much as they can get into their mouths, so don't put too much food in at once.

My tiger O will get a greyish tint when stressed out I have seen him from brilliant midnight black to a murkey green and many O's change color's over time. Like OFL you can feed your baby O a multitude of different things and this is the time to do it. When an oscar is young if you feed it a variety of foods you have less chance of an adult O that will only eat pellets. Almost all insects are fair game as long as it can fit it in it's mouth. Crickets, Meal Worms, Night Crawlers, Magets, Grasshoppers and the list goes on. If you catch your own insects be careful thats no one is using pesticides near where you get them. The main diet should be a high quality pellet. My O's love freeze dried krill and frozen blood worms. I use to feed my O's feeder fish but as they have grown I havent in the last few months. If you do this you need a seperate tank and after you buy the feeder fish quarantine them for a few weeks so you don't infect your O with any diseases. To be honest watching a 10" oscar chase a gold fish in a 7' long tank isn't as amusing as it use to be. When My O's were young like yours they would zip around the tank chasing rosey reds now there is just no sport in it. It is like locking a deer in a house and going in with an AK47 but thats just my opinion it really comes down to personal preference. Well enjoy your O and post some photos!

congrats on the oscar:).

what size tank do you have your new little buddy in?

as for food i recomend hikari cichlid gold pellets as a main diet:) at your oscars size i would go with the medium sized ones. i also feed frozen bloodworm about 3 times a week and every now and then he gets earth worms and grass hoppers from the garden..but remember only use bugs from your gatden if you dont use any pestacides:)

Yeah i was surprised at how fast he got accustomed to the tank. Was eating only a few hours after we got him.

unfortunately my sister named him Lamo . like Lame-o. and my parents and eveyroen else started calling him that so its stuck.

hes in a 40 gallon tank right now and iv been feeding him pellets and small mosquito larvae.

i now know what you guys mean when you say babies are pigs. he just hangs near the top and begs for food.

anyone remember how mcuh they fed in terms of number of pelletS?

Ive never put a time limit on feeding and alway fed by watching the fish. If they take it eagerly i offer more an till they are not rushing to get it. once they relax and are taking the food at a more slower pace i stop. I only offer the food over 1-2 mins and this maybe where you guys get the time limit from?? I would only put in 2 or 3 pellets at a time this way if they stop feeding you not got to fish loads out.
