hi, i know a lot of people on here ask questions about restricting your oscars diet to frozen food as a "treat", what i want to know is, can you feed your oscar frozen food everyday with a couple of pellets?
my oscar is 7 inches and i gave him frozen krill today and 2 large hikari pellets and it was like a meal for him, not to much to make him fat as he still wanted more but enough to fill him. i want to know, if it would be good for him if i gave him this sort of diet everyday? i would vary the frozen from bloodworm, krill and hole small muscles, and probably a few other types:)
i know they eat around 60% live stuff in the wild and i just thought it would be real good for him to have this diet.
i did think of the cost and without the pellets it works out at about £2 a month:) not bad ay.
your comments and sugestions please:)

The reason I like feeding my fish pellets is the fact that they have vitamins added to them. I do feed my fish on frozen krill, bloodworm, frozen fish, occasionally cockles and muscles everyday[well not the whole list], but they also get pellets most days as well. A varied diet is definitely better in my opinion. You don't have to feed pellets every day, I just think that the good quality products and goods as the main part of an Oscars diet

I feed much the same as OFL, a lot of people go on about live fish but it is a wast if you ask me.a good mixed diet with pellet as the base is as good as you can get. the only live things i put in my tank is worms, grasshopper, mealworm, maggots. the diet will make a differance to how your fish looks(colour wise) and health. it will also make a differance as to how well it grows but size and growth are also related to water condition. Having high nitrates will slow growth. i dont think its the nitrates themselves but something else thats present when they are high.If you look into the world of fishing, carp are getting bigger all the time. This is due to the large amount of high protein pellets that carp fisherman use.these pellets are like we feed to our oscars.so stick with a good mix that wont break the bank is what i do.

My oscars and pangasius are on frozen diet daily (every morning). They consumed about 1.0 kg of frozen beef heart/pork spleen a week which cost me around P80.00 ($1.73) Live guppy, worms, and other live insects from my garden is their occasional treat. Pangasius are meat eater and they don't mind any live moving objects.
So far, I can say my pets are all healthy and active.

I see no problems with the diet you have suggested. Cichlid pellets are designed to provide everything oscars need so as long as they get some per week you will be ok. Try to vary the diet a bit more by adding some other type of food into the diet to stop your oscar getting hooked onto the 2 things you are feeding

this is why you really need a varied and mixed diet or they can become a one food only fish, this can be expensive too. starve it for a few days then try pellets if you want it to start to take a mix.

I agree on that..... starved them for two day, and they will grab anything that dropped on the water on the 3rd day. But be careful also, pellets are dried and will expand if your fish grabs too much in short span of time when hungry and will cause trouble of bloated abdomen.

Try starving for 6 days, then feed pellets. If he dont eat, feed the prawns then starve for 6 more days. He should eat pellets then
