I was just wondering if my oscar has "HITH" or if its just a battle wound.
I noticed it about a dday ago it doesnt seem to be growing or getting mucus or anything on it as of yet if anyone can help it would be great.
Sorry its not the greatest pic but as soon as I get a camera close to the tank he sticks his mouth on the glass

It seems to be a bruise. Please look around for pics of HITH so you can compare the "holes" with what your fish has. Other than location, it doesn't look like HITH to me.

What are your water parameters? tank size? filtration?

It is not usual to have HITH in pretty good cared tanks; as fas as I know, HITH is easily avoidable if the tank endures healthy maintenance routines and your fish has proper nutrition.

I wouldnt worry to much as there is only one mark. Keep a close eye for more if the do appear do a few more water changes. nitrates and stress seem to be the most common reason for HITH. just to make sure I would test your water parameters.

How long has your new filter been setup. I ask this cos a lot of people fale to cycle the tank and filter before putting fish in.again a water test kit will tell you if there is a problem here.

good bacteria could had been colonized your
new filter by that time and changing your water
2x a week would make your water in good condition.
I believe that mark is just a wound.
How big is your oscar?
how many fish do you keep in your tank?

I am not sure on your knowledge on fish keeping or if you have had fish before. But if you keep the water in good condition, your fish should be fine. Testing for ammonia, nitrates, nitrites & ph will give you most of the answers. keep nitrates below 40pph but around 10 or 20 is prefered. ph should be around 6.5 to 7 and best not adjusted unless its far off. the rest should read 0%. any reading in this area shows as a problem and must be addressed.

your filter has been running for a month so should be cycled. Make sure you don't mess up the cycle when cleaning, This is another common problem people tend to make. if you are new to fish keeping. have a read on site about maintenance before cleaning your filter or ask advice. a 25% water change once a wk should be ok but testing is the only sure way to know. HITH tend to start in small white holes or indents and get larger and increase in number. mostly around the head the lateral line but will spread if not treated. a nitrate test will be your best bet to avoid HITH. If the wound gets deeper and more seem to appear around the same area its a good sign of HITH. Hope this has been of help.
