I currently have one oscar in a 100 gallon tank. When i bought him he was about 1 inch long. He is now approximately 3 and half inchs long. I have had him for 5 months. Is this the size he should be? if not is there something i am doing wrong? I have kept fish for 2 and half years and have a blue mbuna in a seperate tank that is about 6 inchs long. I have not had issues with him, but as I look at other oscars i notice they are quite a bit bigger at 5 months than mine is. I also am concerned because i noticed the tips of his fins are a kind of clear or white. The fins do not appear tattered or damaged. Is this a parasite? Any help would be appreciated.

what are your water readings and how often are you feeding this growth sounds about normal to me the white clear on the tips of the fins could be new growth my albino always has clear tips as he is still growing and at a fast rate

From my experience, an Oscar will normally gain approximately 1 inch a month in their first year. Problem is, it's very difficult to measure fish so it can be hit and miss when trying to measure them. Whenever a fish shows signs of changes, you must do a water test straightaway. If indeed your fish was 1 inch when you got it, it was probably between one month in six weeks old. I shouldn't worry, not all fish grow at the same rate.
