Well, an oscar is, afterall, a fish, and we ALL know fish eat worms! I belive there are different kinds of earthworms. Which is the best kind????

Also my oscar is about 3-1/2 inches so supposed I'm supposed to chop them up before serving. Should i wash them off first or just chop them after removing from the dirt????

Thanks

There are lots of different worms, all of them will be readily accepted by fish. I suppose it depends on how big your Oscar is. If they are fairly small Oscars, then you are probably better off feeding the smaller worms. Problem is, I don't know what you call down in South Africa. Up here, we have Dendrbena worms, red worms and of course the biggest of them all, lob worms. I'm sure there are plenty of other worms, these are the ones I know because they are used in fresh water fishing. A lot of worms, especially Dendrbena and reds can be found in compost heaps, these will be perfectly okay for your fish. These are probably the easiest worms to harvest because lob worms are normally the type of worm you find on your lawn in the evening on a damp night. You can go out with a torch and wet the ground, this is often a good way of catching them.

Here in Devon where I live, they have a worm Charming contest every year

If you want to get rid of the dirt in them worms just chop the top and tail off and squeeze along the worms length(messy job). Someone told me another way is to put them in milk but i tried it and it didnt work. Me, I just rinse them under a tap and chuck them in. Oscars dont eat the dirt they expell it thro their gills. If your oscar cant eat a whole worm just cut them with scissors. You will be surprise just how long a worm they can eat

I appreciate it. I'll try it. Maybe for now I'll just slice them and squeeze out the guts so it won't be as messy for the tank Thanks again!

I think I'm going to try the fishing worms and try to raise them. The smaller worms I'll feed whole after rinsing but the larger ones I'll cut with a knife and squeeze out their guts to keep the tank clean...cool! Thanks!

Sometimes when I chuck a large whole worm in you get a fish grabbing each end. They both move and pull and they usually end up breaking the worm in 2 with a piece each. Its great fun to watch but over quickly

Some fish dont let go when they get food. I remember once in a local fish shop they had some small jaguars in with blockheads. Unfortunately the largest jag had one of the blockheads in its mouth. When I pointed out to a shop worker this and suggested he remove the jag (blockheads were selling at £6 each) he netted the jag and put it in a tank out the back. He then came over to me and told me the jag didnt spit the blockhead out. Amazing eh!
