Hello everyone, Happy holidays! I was wondering if anyone came across and Oscar that likes to jump up out of the water? He has always done this but it makes me nervous with the new 75 gal tank and all...I have yet to find a hood for it so I have some covering over it now for the meantime....But he tends to jump up in the middle of the night and it scares the Sh** out of me! He is doing it right now! hahah little pain in the arse

it is normal for oscar to jump. it will take any gap or
clear opening on top of the tank. that is why people give
clearance allowance from top level of the water and top
edge of the tank. moreover, people put top cover to avoid
such flight.
when oscar is hungry, they react on flying object above the
tank. this is where accident happen when they tried to grab
the insect....booommm.... outside the tank already.
in my set up, i have glass top slate covering to hold my
open type filtering box.

one of my O's jumped out of the tank today he loves those crickets.
hes a bit scratched up and stressed but hes getting better. i was pretty worried it was a solid fall on to my tiles from the top.

It's vitally important that you always have a lid and your tank when keeping Oscars. I've read quite a few stories of people who have lost Oscars because they have literally jumped out of the tank. I don't think they do it on purpose, Oscars are very curious fish that have very good eyesight. There's a video on the website somewhere of my Oscars lurching at a fly that had somehow got in between the underside of the lid and the condensation covers, these could have easily jumped out of the tank if there wasn't a lid on it.

my os love jumping as well. ill be sitting on my computer and ill hear them hitting the glass. also seal gaps between the filters and such. about a weak ago, my jacks started breeding again. and the female got out betweem a small cracl next to the filter. unfortunately, i wasnt home all day and i found him dead and dried up on the ground. they never jumped before, but what im thinking happened is the male went after her and she ended up at the top and jumped a bit to try to escape. so its always important to keep your tank well sealed, esp if uou know youve got jumpers.
ive also been curious to see how high the os actually jump. they hit the lid pretty forcefully, but seem to enjoy it very much haha.

that is why it is best to keep a distance of the water level to the rim of the tank. this will give the fishes a space in the tank wher they can jump. in my case, i keep the water leevel 4 inches below the rim of tank glass.
with cover or lid on it.

i just stumbled onto this web site today...got a oscar from my parents who
had bought him to go with their 15 or so inch red devil chiclid, it tried to
eat the oscar who was only a 1 1/2 inches in lenght. my dad put him in my
fish tank after rescuing him from the jaws of death. he lost his dorsal and
tail fins from damage (they have since grown back. my oscar's name is Finagain,
now 3 maybe 4 inches and always snatches food from my hand, about 5 to 6 inches
above the water level. looking to put a new lid on the tank, he took the long
dive to the to the floor one day while trying to snatch food from my hand
that was not even over the tank. good luck at keeping him in.
