TOPIC: my oscar has pit's! need help

my oscar has pit's! need help 3 years, 4 months ago #20493

i have two oscars around 7 months old. they are both growing fantasicly except one has little pit's on his head (i call him brad) he's always had them but the bigger he gets the more noticeable they are. the other one (ange) is perfectly fine so i'm not worried about them being contagous just wondering if anyone else has a similar issue

while having no picture/s yet, you can browse some posting
here about hole in the head so that you will have an idea
on how does one looks like.

sounds to me like the senaory pits that all oscars have on their heads ..as you say they have ALWAYS been there the sensory pits will grow in size as the fish grows ..look in the "white tigers"thread in photos and videos theres a great pic of an O facing the camera in ultra hd you can see the sensory pits in the pic clearly .....look at the uniform shape and positioning of them and compare them to yours !!!!hith pits usually take an ununiform shape and its highly unlikely that hith holes will be symetrically positioned ...hope this helps

i know what the sensory nodes are, i hav got two o's! if both of them had "the pit's" i wouldn't be asking, but brad is the only oscar i have seen that has them. i'm not concern'd really, he's healthy(all bar the pits)and eats well and seems happy enough, i'm just wondering what they might be. the "pit's" i'm asking about look similar to say........ someone who's got acne scaring.

since your sure that your not looking at sensory pits on your oscar it could be hith but without pictures it is impossible to say with certainty. could you tell us what your maintenance scheduale is like and what your current water parameters are along with tanksize and tankmates.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

thanks paul. i just had a look at the link for hole in the head and they look very similar to the pit's that my brad's got. it's getting to late for me to have a decent look at the site but i'm thinking that's it. thanx for pointing me in the right direction.

clear water doesnt necessarily mean good water. the only way to tell if your water is in good shape is to test it for ammonia nitrites and nitrates.
also a high nitrate level is one of the major causes of hith along with poor diet and maybe even carbon in your filters. i would strongly recommend testing your water to ensure that the water condition is not your main problem.

if you had said at the beginning of this thread you"had holes in the head of one oscar that definately were not sensory pits because you know what sensory pits were and your oscar had something other than these "AND posted your water parameters we could have give a more accurate prognosis.... instead the info you gave in the opening post suggested we speculate the symptoms of the condition WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT happned and you also said "HE HAS ALWAYS HAD THEM" and he was seven months old by your own admission which lead me to beleive the holes could not be HITH as the time scale for having the holes did not add up with the progression of the hith bacteria.....you did ask for OPINIONS and i merely gave you mine but if we as a group or individuals have to explain out theorys and justfy our posts without being given the correct info in the first place its hardly worth replying to any calls for help... the forum has a thread dedicated to "what info to give to make it easier and quicker for us to help you" which is only what i was trying to do ....we are still waiting for your water parameters ???????????and i say the above statement without mallace as an individual who bears no connection to the organisation or managament of the OFL site therefore exonerating the administrators and moderators from any conection whatsoever from the above statement ....thank you:angry:
