TOPIC: Choosing my fish!

Choosing my fish! 4 years, 11 months ago #2191

I already Have my fish picked and ready I went to all the petstores about 20 times before and looked at all of them Oscarr's dont seem to sell alot . But now the guy is telling me I should get a baby oscar to watch and see him grow the baby oscars are just over and inch, but I already paid and have on hold the 3 inch, that I picked out. Would it be better to get a smaller fish at first?

he said I could switch it even though I have on hold!

There is little difference in age there, perhaps a month or two between those. The 1" size is really an infant and the 3" is more the baby. Just remember, what you see in these sizes colorwise is subject to change, sometimes dramatic changes in coloration, several times as they grow to adults. Pick what you like but don't put either into an uncycled aquarium.
The smallest I have seen for sale myself is at least 2" in size, say 2 to 2-1/2" and that is the norm before babies are turned over for resale. Don't be swayed by what that guy wants to sell you, but pick what you like for yourself. You will not miss much if you take the 3" fish instead as like I said, they grow about an inch a month at first so you can figure one fish is a month or two older then the other.

Whatever size you decide on, make sure you buy appropriatly sized food for him as the infant will need flake food and the 3" size can eat small cichlid pellets.

I buy most of my Fish supplies "on line" as I find better prices there often enough.

Your Oscar should be fed a variety of foods but the staple diet should be good fortified enriched pellet foods like this one here:
Hikari Cichlid Gold
www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Disp...mp;amp;N=2004+113278
(Get the minis for a 3" fish and buy the smallest bag of it because he will outgrow it before the bag is finished.)

baby oscars should be fed three times a day and the pellet should be daily if not twice a day. Then you can supplement with freeze dried worms such as tubifex, blood works, wax worms, crickets, and another food I like is tetra Color Sticks Cichlid food which you can break in half for junior fish.
