Anybody know how the Oscar fish got it's name "Oscar"?

Nobody really knows how it gained its name the Oscar. I'm guessing they probably named it after somebody. Who?, your guess is as good as mine

My mates dads aunties cousins uncle had a good mate who was friends with a fisherman who one day caught a fish and named it an oscar after nobody had named it.
and miracally it has managed to stay as oscar.
2 Tiger Oscars, 1 Lutino Oscar, 1 Jack Dempsey, 3 Clown Loaches, 1 Blue Phantom Pleco.

It was only a joke, i thought you would of realised that straight away.
but to be honest, its a good question, where did the name oscar come from?
i suppose the name 'O' is a good name for them because 90% of them have that O on the tail. has anyone else noticed this?
both of mine have it.

im sure i read somewhere that the name oscar is linked to the the name RIVERDOG as im sure you know the oscar is so called

I think the nickname "River dog" is relatively new. People have been keeping Oscars since the 60s, probably even before.
